I wanted to switch things up a little bit and chat with you about something a little bit more personal that I think many of you need to hear, because I feel many of you are going through something similar. I am not ashamed to talk about this. I will be totally honest, I’m a little intimidated today to share this post, because it is my personal story and it is showing you a vulnerable side. I just ask that you sit back, relax, listen. I felt very strongly like some of you needed to hear this. That’s why I’m even sharing.

Time to Rewind

I really want to rewind a little bit. I want to share with you the moment I realized I was doing business, acting as a business owner, as a CEO and doing it all wrong. It was actually pretty recently. For anyone that is new to our community, you may not know I have worked with wedding professionals now for the past two years. But before doing that I ran a photography studio and I owned my own wedding planning business. It dawned on me the first of the year, that I was hiding behind my desk. I was hiding behind my work. I was staying busy just to avoid dealing with my own blocks and problems and dealing with things that one would think don’t affect your business, but they do and they do in a really big way.

When I had this realization and AH-HA moment… how many of us just say “I’m good, I’m just really busy”, or just work work work work work. You are always finding something else to work on in your business. But how often do we take a step back and see if that is really what needs to be worked on. I think that happens way fewer times than any of us would like to happen or think about.

Done Trying to Fit In

Also, I was done. Once I had that epiphany, I was so done with trying to fit in and fit the mold of what has been created before me. Or what has been made before me. What the path to being a wedding planner or being a photographer or being a mentor looks like. Screw all that! It is my turn to set the rules. I realized I had so much to offer the world and I realized I was in charge of my business in a whole new way. I felt I had been doing all of these things, I’ve been an entrepreneur since early 2010… I’ve been at this almost a decade and so I felt like all I was doing was finding something else that needed to be worked on.

I felt like I was doing everything in my business and all of the thing and yet I wasn’t seeing the results. It wasn’t matching. My effort, my contribution and energy wasn’t being matched by what I was receiving. And again, this was a part of the ah-ha moment. I was all done with shaming myself for the days I had super low energy and then the days I had super high energy. There was no in-between. I was done beating myself up about that too. When I kind of realize that, it took me up until this point… 6 months or so… to feel comfortable in talking about it. You can make major shifts and changes in your life, but it doesn’t mean it has all integrated.

This is also a major reason why you no longer see Wedding Boss Life on everything. IU realized what I was doing wasn’t my path. I took a step back and took stock of my life and I knew I needed to make changes in areas, but I wasn’t sure where or how. Everything, led up to that.

One thing I definitely want to mention is that if you are in the Facebook Community, if you are looking solely for business advice and strategy you are in the wrong place. This community is no longer that. It is evolving. It has changed and that is okay. It has taken me awhile to embrace that. Honestly, because I was so afraid of what other people would think of me and my business. At this point, screw it.

Are you just really busy in business?

I am giving people an out who are just looking for straight up business advice, because this is no longer that space. There are plenty of other free groups and communities out there that you can join. But also, I am taking back my power and one thing I know I haven’t been doing a lot of lately is showing you how I can help you. Showing you how I can show up and support you, because I haven’t been able to show up myself.

With all of that being said, I’m pretty excited because there are going to be some major changes that are happening. One of those is not being afraid to talk about what I do best and that is helping to integrate your blocks, integrate what is going on within you into your business and vice versa. They are not separate entities. Have you ever noticed if you feel you are doing all of things and wearing all the hats and you don’t know what you’re doing wrong… the thing is… often times it has nothing to do with the business itself. How many people actually talk about that though? How many people bring that up to the surface. How many people will sit there and show you exactly how to do that and integrate the two.

That is where my gifts and what I do comes into play. I really truly feel like we are going to be changing the course, changing the direction of how business are run. They are no longer part of the dark ages where everything is systematic and analytics. No. We are humans your personality flows through your own business and your own brand.

Integrating Yourself into Your Business

I am going to begin shamelessly showing you how to integrate yourself more into your business. That is why I wanted to hop on today. This is what I wanted to talk to you about. Because to be totally honest, I had been floating for the last how ever many years. Yeah, I felt like I was successful. I was making money. I had clients. I was happy. But I wasn’t fulfilled. I knew something was missing.

Fast forward to today, I am showing people how to pinpoint that within themselves. I had a fantastic call with a client a couple days ago and one of the things that said to me that stuck out so much was that she had gone to guru #1 and #2 and #3 to help with her marketing efforts and getting found and having the right clients find her, but really within a matter of 25 minutes I was able to pinpoint exactly what the real problem was and it had nothing to do with her marketing efforts or her business ideas or techniques. It all boiled down to her self worth. And that is a reflection in your business because whether or not you want to believe it, energy is tied up in it. Everything is made of energy. We know this scientifically. Atoms are energy. To negate that you as a business owner are not a reflection of that in your business, is ridiculous.

Stop hiding behind your business

I feel I am opening the door to something so much greater and bigger than the next course and the next webinar. If I get one more friggin’ email with someone trying to sell me something, I may kill them. They do leave addresses at the bottoms of their newsletters right? I mean I don’t have that much energy to go stalk them and whatever… but oh my god. I cannot do it anymore. It is too much.

With all of that being said, with the client I was working with a few days ago, when she had that epiphany that the problems in her business were a direct reflection of what was going on inside of her and her blocks… when I was able to pinpoint it, she had a major release. She was in tears. She was hysterical. Its not like I meant for that to happen, but then a couple days later I got a message from her telling me how there is already movement happening in her business. There are already changes happening just from those last couple days. What I am trying to say is I am taking off the mask. I am stepping off from the desk. It is time to get real.

The Biggest Business Mistake I See Creatives Making Every Day

It has been a hot minute since I have hopped on with a new blog post, but I wanted to bring attention to something that I am seeing more and more regularly. It is this mistake (I don’t really believe in mistakes but this comes pretty close to one) that creative business owners are making regularly.

It starts with this belief that in order for you to be growing and to be successful in your business, there is this whole idea that you have to be productive or active in order to make that happen. That cannot be further from the truth. I’ll tell you why…

Business is a Reflection of the Seasons

Some of you may have heard me talk about this in the past, and that’s okay because I am going to bring more awareness around it. You are not the energizer bunny. Your business is no the energizer bunny. Your business reflects seasons. Your business goes through cycles, whether it is reflecting of the seasons or moon phases… it is ironic how not only do the seasons give you those same periods of rest and actions, as the moon phases do… it is supposed to be that way in business too guys.

We are in the Winter season right now, unless you are living in the Bahamas or Miami, you are probably experiencing the doldrums of the winter blues. But the Winter serves a purpose. It is a period for you to rest to make plans and winter coincides with the new moon. This phase that we are currently in is the perfect time to set intentions, to really begin to look at new beginnings, to plan what actions you are going to take. It is not necessarily this period where you need to be go go go.

Then there comes Spring. Spring is the season of taking leaps, or inspired action, of sowing those seeds you planned out back in January when you were chilling on your couch and binging on Netflix. The Spring is when you go full force. The spring can be relatable to the phase of the moon known as the waxing moon.

So not only are we in winter right now, but the Spring time is when you are supposed to get up and go. This is something that so many entrepreneurs either bat themselves up about or they think they are not doing enough or they think they aren’t doing the right things, if they feel the need to take a break, to push pause, to come back at things again in 24 hours. This whole idea of masculine energy… it is very go go go, its get shit down. Doesn’t matter how its going to happen but you’re going to bulldoze through it and you’re going to make it happen. That is masculine energy. What happens when we have too much of that in our business is there is this entire imbalance that begins to happen. And what does that actually look like for you in your business?

What Does Imbalance in Business Look Like?

It starts to resemble not having enough clients to worrying about where your next client is going to come from. To not being paid what you truly are worth. To not even having your ideal clients. That is how an imbalance in energy in your business begins to manifest. There is this problem that has permeated our creative industry where everyone thinks they are supposed to just go go go and get it done. But the reality is, they are not addressing the real root of the problem.

I am telling you, because how many times have you tried something else in order to fix the need to have more clients or tried something else to figure out who your ideal client is. Or tried something else to nail down your pricing. How many of you can resonate with that?

As a society of creative entrepreneurs we have come to believe that we need to find an outer solution to our problems. Again, that cannot be further form the truth because an imbalance from energy means you have too much of one thing happening, so you have to bring in more of the other thing to make it balanced. What is the opposite? Feminine energy. What does this look like?

It looks like this nurturing, loving, compassionate, listening, comforting energy. Not the go go go get it done. It’s the sit back, take a breath, it’s alright. When there is this imbalance that affects so many entrepreneurs, they think that a webinar or a course or a master class or a coach will be the solution. It is the end all. But what they are not addressing is the real root of the problem and that is the imbalance of energy within your business.

With all of that being said, I have created a cycles in business roadmap for you. You can use this from now on so whenever you feel you aren’t doing enough or you shouldn’t take a break today… whatever feelings arise for you… whip this sheet out and take a look at it. It will show you exactly where you are supposed to be in your business as far as it relates to energy and whatever cycle you are currently in.

How many of us beat ourselves up if we feel we cannot stop? How many times have you said that to yourself (myself included)… what ends up happening? You end up doing the same task over and over and over again. It doesn’t ever feel right. It doesn’t ever feel like I’ve completed it. I’m doing more work in the long run than I even should be to begin with because I didn’t listen to my body. I didn’t listen to what I was being told. You fight it, because again you feel you are an energizer bunny. You feel like you are supposed to just plow through and get it done.

That is that masculine energy again. That is okay, we need that masculine energy. But as business owners we have too much of it. We have way too much of it. That is probably why you are an entrepreneur to begin with.

I wanted to just leave this with you and share the fact that it is okay to take that break. It is okay to be in a place of rest and not feeling guilty about it. You are a business owner, you bust your butt. You think about your business 24/7, before you go to sleep. How can you make it better? How can you get more clients?

You deserve a day, once in a while without beating yourself up, to do the inner work on yourself. If there is no you, then there is no business.

Some people have a longer winter or spring or summer than others. It doesn’t matter. It can be different for everyone. But that is why it pisses me off to no end when you hear these gurus and leaders out there and they’re like “take my course, do this one more thing…”. Holy shit! If I hear the word hustle one more time, I’m gonna shank a bitch. Haha I’m sorry! But really though, the idea of hustle is so stupid. It should be so much more of a flow. It should be so much more ease. It should come easier. We make it so much harder.

It is exhausting and it leads to burnout. It leads to all of the things we fear as creatives. But if we just listen to our intuition when it tells us to put the laptop down, put the phone down. If we actually listen to that… we wouldn’t have half the friggin’ problems we do as business owners. 

The people we see online as successful entrepreneurs and creatives, they are able to take those breaks that they need. They are able to take the time to breathe., but they just don’t share that because it is frowned upon. Which is so silly to me. They think it will show weakness, but in reality it shows they are a well rounded machine, a well rounded business.

Balance the Masculine Energy as an Entrepreneur

My Awakening

The Story of My Awakening


Things might get a little vulnerable because I am going to share my story with you all.

Let’s Start at the Beginning

Today is about me and my story. It is an interesting one, for sure. I am telling you guys this because I have seen a lot of people saying that intuition you have to be either a mythical unicorn to tap into it or you have to be born psychic and that is not true. I am living proof of that.

My story is going to be similar to a lot of yours and that is why I really wanted to share this with you today. Having “the gift” isn’t something we are all born with. I was of this mentality too. I always used to think you were born psychic or born with all of these crazy things… you could see dead people straight out of the womb. How scary would that be? Could you imagine?

I am 31 years old. I have been “awake” since 2013. It hasn’t been that long in the grand scheme of things. Its been 6 years. I went to college for Psychology. I got my degree and a minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Oddly enough, the majority of empaths or psychics that come into their gifts later on in life aren’t really sure what they want to major in, so the majority of them major in psychology because something just resonates with them… human behavior. I find that interesting… that is so true! I had no idea why I wanted to learn about psychology and all of the things.

I thought I was going to become a guidance counselor or I thought I was going to be a professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. That was where my heart was. At the time, upon my senior year I was actually married. I had a practice marriage. Yes, praise to the practice marriages! Right around the end of my fall semester senior year, my partner at the time said “mmm I don’t love you anymore”. Yeah… so as you can imagine my entire world got flipped upside down. I was supposed to go and visit Clark University a week after he told me that and I remember having to write the professor of the program and say “I’m so sorry my life has drastically changed”. I thought my world was over. Looking back now, it was the universe intervening. 

Straight Outta College

I graduate from college, I get a divorce, I am all the things. I start working at a bank because straight out of college, how many of us got a job? If you did I want to know because you are a freakin’ unicorn. I started working at a bank and then very shortly there after I went into direct sales. I wasn’t very happy, let’s just say. That is putting it very lightly…

2012 rolls around and I begin working for a Boston wedding photographer who also happened to become my very best friend very quickly. For those Grey’s Anatomy fans out there she was the Christina to my Meredith. She was my person. It is very interesting to me because I had never had this strong of a connection with anyone ever. I had had really good friend sin high school and college but never had that type of soulmate best friend level connection. I start working 2012 with her. February 2013 this is where it gets good.

The Night It All Changed

I accompany the wedding photographer and the second shooter to a wedding. We were the three best friends. I go to this wedding and the mother of the bride, we knew going into this, was psychic. She was a world renowned psychic. She did readings for celebrities. The wedding happens and nothing “odd” happens. It was relatively a normal wedding day. At the end of the night we are packing up our stuff and she happens to come back into the room. Picture a two level wedding venue. A beautiful old rustic finished barn. She comes back to her table which is on the first level and grabs her purse. In order for her to come upstairs to us she had to make a point to go up these stairs. She says, after coming up to see us, we are the only ones left… she says “Who here knows Flo? Who here knows Florence?” I immediately burst into tears. MY grandmother who pretty much raised me, she was my maternal figure, had just passed. Just shy of a month prior. As you can imagine, for those of you who have lost your mom… I apologize. I personally haven’t lost my mom but I have lost my maternal figure and that is the worst. The worst.

So as you can imagine, I’m doing what I’m doing right now… and here we are 6 years later. Just imagine that fresh. She says “She is here with you. And she wants you to know she is okay. She didn’t suffer. She is at peace.” Now quick backstory, my grandmother has polio. She actually wore a brace her entire life. One leg was so significantly shorter than the other that she couldn’t walk without this brace. At the end of her life, she had very severe dementia and Alzheimer’s. She wasn’t really there. So I always wondered if she was present. As you guys know, it wrecks havoc on your entire family. She was able to come to my second wedding, my real wedding. She was able to meet Liam, my oldest son. SO that I am grateful for. And that is something the mother of the bride said to me. She answered that question because it was something I had always wondered. She knew who Liam was. The mother of the bride said to me, “you are doing a wonderful job raising Liam and she sees that. She is so proud of you.” If someone at that moment could have given me a million dollars or the confirmation that my grandmother was able to meet Liam… I would’ve said fuck the million dollars. I don’t want it. That’s how important it was to me.

The moment my soul woke up

You Have the Gift

So anyway… obviously she had my attention at this point. Obviously I am listening to everything this woman is saying to me. She goes on to talk about some things that I would’ve only known about with my grandmother. Like the secret stash of Werther’s. Just little things. She goes on to tell my friends Jess and Erin about them. She actually predicted that my friend Erin was going to have twins, blonde haired twins a boy and a girl. And if you knew Erin at that time she had a daughter, she was older, she was good! She was good with that child train. Babies were not in the forecast. So she laughed it off. It came true. All of that happens and then towards the end of the conversation that has completely blown me away. She just looks at me and kind of stares at me. She just looks at me and says to me, “You know you have the gift, right?”. And I just look at her like what the hell are you talking about. Christmas is over, its February… my Ian is buying me a Valentines day gift? You have to give me some context here. She looked at me and said, “I want you to do a quick exercise with me. I’m thinking of my very best friend, her name is Pam. I’m picturing her in my mind. I want you without thinking about this, I want you to explain to me what she looks like... go”. Without any hesitation I said, “well she is about my height. She is a little bit heavier set. She has brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes”. And so this woman, just looks at me and smiles. And she said “That’s Pam”. I honestly at that moment didn’t really know what had just happened. Was I on a game show? Like what is even happening right now? She said, “You have the gift you just need to cultivate it and learn it”. And I of course didn’t know how to do that. And she didn’t know that I’m a wicked nerd and I love learning. So she opened Pandora’s box on this one.

Change of Trajectory

I just want to thank her. I know this isn’t directly towards her, but I hope to someday just be able to give her the biggest hug. Embrace her, and just say thank you. Thank you for changing the trajectory of my life. At that time I had very bad postpartum. I was kicking myself thinking I was this terrible person because here I am taking anti-depressants. I will never forget her saying to me, “I work with a lot of clients and I am able to help a lot of them get off medications. You are one of a handful of people that I want to say to you… you need your medication. You are not you without your medication”. I didn’t say anything to her! I didn’t prompt her. She knew nothing! She knew nothing about me guys! How is that even possible?

That is 2013. I continue working for the Boston wedding photographer. I continue working with my best friends. And then towards the end of 2015 my intuition really starts to get strong. Now mind you I’ve been reading the books, I’ve been pulling cards, I’ve been getting crystals here and there. Doing all the things kind of secretly, under the radar. People don’t know publicly. Only those closest to me… my husband and my two best friends. 2015 I get this intuitive nudge if you will. It is hands down the hardest reality check I have ever received in my life. If you had said to me, back in 2015, you are never going to talk to your two best friends ever again. You are no longer going to work with them. Your life is about to change… I would have said you are full of shit and you need to get yourself checked.

That is exactly what happened. I had been getting these nudges that I needed to leave. I needed to quit. I needed to go out on my own. I didn’t want to acknowledged it. Reality is, would you want to say goodbye to your best friends for the rest of your life? No! I kept getting these promptings and they kept getting stronger and then finally the universe… the divine intervened and made it happen. So I went from having a get a job, two best friends that I couldn’t have given my left leg to have better ones… all of these things… and then it happened. I felt like my world had been flipped upside down. But I can tell you what… if I didn’t have those intuitive nudges telling me this is about to happen… I don’t know what that whole situation would’ve looked like for me. I’m sure I would’ve picked up the pieces, but how would that have looked? It was hard enough as it was.

That was the beginning of 2016. Then I immediately transition to becoming a wedding planner. It was what I was already doing essentially. It just made the most logical sense. A year in, I have all of these clients come out of nowhere. Its not like I had money to be marketing myself. I finished my very first year with 8 clients. Who does that? I went into the following year almost completely booked. That doesn’t happen. I have many friends that have been in the industry for years and they are like… it took me a year and a half to actually get a client or whatever! But I realize within that first year I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t happy and I didn’t know why.

My Soul's Awakening

I do some digging and soul searching. I realize what was lacking was my ability to really help and serve people at the level I wanted to serve. For me that meant helping business owners with behind the scenes of their businesses. Helping them figure out how to set it all up and make it all work. I use this analogy all the time… just because you are a world renown photographer, doesn’t mean you know how to be the CEO of a company and vice versa. If you are the CEO of a fortune 500 company, that doesn’t necessarily mean you know how to take an award winning photograph. Right? That is what I felt I had come to do. So Wedding Boss Life is born. Here I am helping all of these amazing wedding professionals, teaching them about marketing and systems and SEO. Something is still missing. Now mind you, I could have quite honestly just been like “no its find, I’m loving what I’m doing”. But I didn’t, because I knew the reality of when you get those subtle nudges is coming for a reason. I knew there was a reason. I started to lean into it more, instead of being scared of it. What that ended up doing was one full year after me launching Wedding Boss Life, on a LIVE… I feel this push. That is the only real way I can describe it. I feel this push to tell the world that I am intuitive. Now this is something I have kept hidden to myself for the last 5 years. This is only something I know about. For those of you who have ever had to step outside of your comfort zone, who have ever had to come out of the closet (per say) in whatever way, shape, or form that looks like for you… whether that is coming to terms and reality with what your passions truly are, what you really want to do for business, the truth surrounding your sexual orientation… it doesn’t matter. You guys know that feeling of fear and worry of judgement and utter “Oh my god I am never going to be able to put this coat back on me”. Once I step out that door gets locked. I can’t play it safe anymore. 

So thank you universe for allowing me to embrace that change because I was able to go LIVE and I did an energy forecast for the week. The response to that was something I will never ever forget. It was me coming out of the closet and I had so many people that either had an inkling or loved every facet of who I was and embrace me and they were so supportive and that is when I truly felt like my life has just changed completely and there is no going back. 

The Transformation

So that is how this has kind of come about. I went from being a business coach, if you will, but before that was a wedding planner, before that I was a studio manager, and before that I had owned my own business. I went from being all of the logical, all of the systemic, all of the rational… and quite honestly being viewed as the smart girl. I graduated 10th in my class. I graduated suma cum. I’m not telling you this to brag, I’m telling you this because I value intelligence and I value education and I value learning. But now I just flipped the friggin’ script and I just came out March 2018 and I say to the world “by the way I am an intuitive” and that was it. I began to incorporate it more publicly into my work. Before if you worked one-on-one with me, it kind of slid under the door. I still was very scared and afraid. The reason why I really want to drive that home, is because that feeling of the unknown, not knowing what is to come, is life. Its business. Its relationships. Its everywhere. When we play it safe, because if we can’t control certain elements of a situation we look for the safety factor. That is what we do as humans. That is what we do as entrepreneurs. Even though being an entrepreneur there is no telling what is going to happen form day to day, we play it safe. That limits us and our growth. It limits the possibilities for the universe to show up and deliver. 

So people will come to me and say things like, “oh I don’t know where I’m going to get my next clients. I don’t know how to price my services. I don’t know how to market”. But the reality of it is they are shutting themselves off from possibility.

Any time someone, a business coach lets say in the online world, proclaims to have the answers to solve all of your business woes. Just want to let you know, what they are providing you is essentially a bandaid to a broken knee. It is essentially receiving a cast over a wound that goes form your shoulder to your arm. It is not what we always need because we are not always getting to the root of the problem. I want you to understand that my story is no different than yours. It is no different. It is just a matter of listening and acting upon that.

That brings us to today. That brings us to here and the now. Now I am an intuitive business coach. I incorporate all of my gifts and all the things. That way you are getting the most well rounded perspective on your life and your business. 

It took me awhile to get to this place. I wouldn’t have been able to tell it so publicly if you had asked me to do it even a few months ago. It is exposing part of yourself that is who you truly are, but you are exposing it to the world and saying “I don’t give a **** if you judge me or not”.

I used to have this really bad habit of doing all things… except for the things that actually mattered. 

You ever have those days where you’re list is never ending, and so instead of actually making headway on your giant list you kinda just netflix and chill, and eat, and social media scroll, and find the time to talk to your neighbor for 45 minutes?

And then it’s 3 o’clock and you got to pick up the babes… and you have just a minor freak out because you literally did but 1 thing on your giant list?

No? Just me?


Why I’m Sharing

I share this because I don’t actually think anyone is immune to the overwhelm that can often times accompany Entrepreneur Life. Sometimes the list is HUGE, and netflix soothes that. 

But want to know what I’ve recently come to realize? 

Half the time my list was so long because it was CHALKED FULL of things that I didn’t actually need to do. The amount of fluff I added on my list because it was part of some strategy or some belief of what I thought I should be doing was pretty ridiculous. 

This was before I realized that there was an easier way of doing things.

A way that didn’t include adding on ten billion things onto my already heavy load of #allthethings

What’s This Easier Way You Speak Of?

I am passionate about teaching Intuition to business owners because this is the tool that will literally support you in fine tuning your business To-Do’s. It’s literally List Fluff’s Kryptonite. 

In this day in age we often glamorize the Hustle… no wonder we are all so burnt out and exhausted at the end of our days. 

And the longer our list gets… The more discouraged we often get.. And the more we see it fit to spend another couple hours chatting with the neighbor about that damn yappy dog across the way. (AKA, your list is building.) 

So, you may be like some of my students who say, "I'd love to be using my Intuition in my business more… but seriously, I don’t have room on my list for literally anything else.


"I’ve tried to tap into that inner voice… but I get crickets. It must not be for me" 

or worse... 

"I’d rather just buy another done for you strategy and have a never ending list of Fluff and Doom!" 

(Don't even get me started on THAT one! Another strategy isn't only the hard way, it’s the route that takes you furthest away from your own innate wisdom!) 

So, it usually comes down to not having room for one more thing on your plate. I get it. You’re in overwhelm city, one more thing is bound to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. 

How much time will this mythical thing you call Intuition add onto my never ending to do list?! 

Ok, let's really address this question... first saying: this is the WRONG question to be asking! 

It's totally backwards! 

Instead of asking how much time using your Intuition in your business will take, tell me how willing you are to stop using these done for you strategies, courses, and holy grails from the Guru’s that aren’t working… so that you can drop them and spend your time using your intuition to create the strategy fine tuned and custom TO YOU.

There are simple changes you can make to your approach in your Business that will create massive changes in not only your connection to your Vision and Why, but the way you operate wholeheartedly.

Lauren Dragon-Cook: Let’s do this thing! It has been a minute, right guys? It ahs been awhile since I’ve hopped on a live. I’ll tell you why.

Changes & Showing Up

The very beginning of 2018 I had set the goal for myself and set the intention (because I was terrified of going live), to go live every week. That is kind of how all of the Tuesday Coffee Chats came about. It also showed me going live isn’t that scary, yes you feel like you are talking to yourself. But it really helps you to be held accountable and to show up for your community.

Recently I as you know, I am making some serious pivots in the business. For those of you who don’t know, this all started 2017 as Wedding Boss Life. I was intending on being a resource for creative wedding professionals and helping them behind the scenes of their businesses. And then I realized what I am doing is applying to everybody, so why am I just doing wedding pros. So then it became Creative Boss Life and then “Hi! We are here”. I finally combined my intuitive gifts and side with actually helping people with their business. That is how Lauren Dragon-Cook kind of came about.

I love that it is my name because I am able to be me. There is no set boundaries or constraints or identity boxes. I really really am thankful for how this journey has evolved. I was talking to someone last night and said I did a live yesterday and di da quick reading for everybody and I lost like… a handful of followers. I was like “I don’t care about the numbers”. For me… I am finally finding my groove. I am finding who my people are. And I don’t want anybody here to be totally honest and frank if you aren’t comfortable with me sharing intuitive guidance because that is who I am.

This is how it is going to be from now on. I am showing up and going all in. Take it or leave it.

I wanted to wrap up these lives with a gift to you guys. For everyone who has stuck with me throughout all of the changes. Everyone who has encouraged me along the way. Everyone who hasn’t pointed the finger and said “witch witch!”. I just want to say thank you.

For that I am giving you this major gift. I had to take a step back and reassess why I was doing this. What about it was making me happy? You are going to see some changes here and there but you will always see my face. I will always be showing up.

Your Power Sheet

How many of you have seen people posting recently “my word for 2019 is…”? Or “I am going to be focusing on… for 2019.”

I don’t know about you, but for me it is not so simple as to just be like “I am going to release everything” or “income”, “abundance”, “alignment”. Its not that easy for me to think of a word. SO I am going to share with you what I do to make this happen.

I am sure some of you have heard of Power Sheets or other year in review calendars. But for me, this is enough. I don’t have to buy one more thing to look at my year in review. To each their own.

I am going to provide you with a bunch of prompts, so feel free to open up a notebook, grab a pen… I want to give you a bunch of prompts that you can work through now, but can also work through once we hop off. 

What I want you to write at the very top of this document is…

“What do I want 2019 to look like?”

And then the first question you are going to ask yourself is: “What do I want to grow or change?” Some examples of this (I literally am going to be giving you my answers so you know what my 2019 is going to look like)… 

  • Broaden peoples perspectives

  • Divine guidance

  • Release fears

  • Embrace all of my uniqueness

  • I am meant to stand out

  • I am a visionary

  • Expansion

  • Purpose

  • Trailblazer

  • Impact

I just did all of this last night, so I will probably going through all of it again and might get a little bit more finer details in there. A year in review and looking to the future does not have to be difficult. It doesn’t have to be this day long process that you have to gear yourself up for. 

Next question you will ask yourself: “What am I grateful for today?”

For me it is my…

  • Intuition

  • Family

  • Home

  • Growth

  • Finding my voice

  • Finding my tribe

  • Clarity and direction

Next question you will ask yourself: “Why do I want to make what matters most to me happen?” Meaning, what are you most passionate about. What is your driving force… why do you do what you do.

  • Because someone is waiting out there to awaken their intuition

Setting Intentions and Finding Your Word for Upcoming Year

Next question to ask: “In order to grow, growth requires moving forward from past paradigms, beliefs that no longer serve us, things that we have come to internalize, healing, looking past past patterns. What does that look like for you?”

For me…

  • The constraints of what _____ should look like

    • This might be the constraints of what being a creative entrepreneur should look like

  • I want to break free of the stereotypical imagery that you have when somebody says the word “psychic”

  • The constraints of what it means to be a mom

  • The constraints of what society has said looking from home should look like

Next question… “how do you feel in this moment?” Be honest with yourself. You know, if you’ve been with me for a hot minute this is a safe space.

For me, how was I feeling in the present moment I was doing this last night…

  • Free

    • For those of you who missed, I talked about my time at Creative at Heart. I loved it! But what I realized in the biggest way, was that I don’t need to look like everybody else. I don’t need to be just another bleh. I am going to be me and you’re either going to love it or hate it. It is the most liberating feeling, but also one of the scariest effing feelings too. It is literally like standing up on a stage at a Sublime concert and you’re standing their naked and you’re waiting for a reaction. What are they going to do? Are they going to love you and cheer you? Or are they going to throw their beer bottles at you? Once you have jumped over that first hurdle… I just don’t give an eff anymore. I just don’t care.

Next question for yourself: “What are you releasing to make room for growth?” This ties into moving forward from past things that are no longer serving you.

For me things I wrote were…

  • Feeling the need to fit in

  • Validation 

  • Past failures

I’m letting that shit go! It is time to say bye! For those of you who are new to the Lauren woo-woo world. Tomorrow is a new moon. What happens on a new moon? It is the ideal time as business owners and creatives to set intentions. Do you think I am doing this now just because? No. There is always a reason to something. Releasing what is no longer serving you. When I am setting intentions I like to take the release and flip it. I will say something like “the need to fit in”. If that is something I am releasing, during a new moon I could say, “I will no longer feel the need to make others happy and I will be content with exactly where I am”.

Next question: “What matters most to me?”

I want you to get really real right now. All kinds of real! All kind of vulnerable. No one is going to see it except you, unless you want them to see it. This is the time to get honest with yourself.

For myself I wrote down…

  • Living life according to my own terms

  • Living through experiences

  • Family

  • Spiritually journey

  • Impact

Now you are going to get into the space where you are starting to get a little into your past year. So the question is: “What worked in 2018?” Be real. We are not talking about what didn’t work yet. We will get there. Maybe it is only one thing! Maybe it is only two things! That is okay!

For me what worked…

  • Shifting to incorporate spiritual and business

  • Stepping into my divine truth

  • Expressing myself fully

  • Recognizing the need for help in certain areas

    It is not a weakness to do this! It is a strength because you are able to see something for what it is, making the best for it, and finding a solution.

Here we go: “What didn’t work in 2018?”

For me…

  • Self imposed doubt

  • Doing things that I did not align with

    What do I mean by that? Somebody asking me a question anywhere outside of the group because they don’t trust the answers they will get in the group and expecting me to give a detailed answer. Now if you are working with me one on one that is a different story! But I am talking about people who have never even spoken to me asking me things that could very well be answered in the group. Things like that!

  • Doubting myself

    Doubting my abilities, if you would resonate with things I was saying…

Next question for yourself: “What are some lessons you learned over the past year?” You always need to find the positive. When you are able to find out and figure out what that experience was trying to teach you, that is where the gold is! That is where growth happens.

Lessons that I learned…

  • Listen to my intuition no matter how silly it may seem

  • No everyone will understand me and my path, but that doesn’t validate my success

Next: “What am I saying no to in 2019?” From this day forward today…

For me it is…

  • Commitments I don’t fully align with

  • Poor uses of my time

  • FOMO

  • Distractions

  • Trying to look like anything and anyone other than myself

Another question for yourself: “What am I saying yes to in 2019?” What do you want to call in? What do you want to allow the universe to give you? What do you want to intentionally bring into your life?

For me…

  • Opportunities for expansion

  • Things that bring me joy

    For me, I just want to live in a state of joy. I want to feel lit up! If something is requested of me and it doesn’t feel right… bye! Not doing it.

Magic Time!

Now here is where the magic happens. This is where you bring it all together. Maybe as you were writing out things you were starting to feel and see some common themes. It is time for this best version of yourself! What do you want that to look like?

“What is the common theme you noticed? What do you want this next chapter to look like?” I want you to write down a whole bunch of words that come to mind.

For me, if I were to go back through and look at everything…

  • Freedom

  • Liberated

  • Purpose

  • Trailblazer

So, when you have written down the words that you see popping up here and there. Circle them. Write them down. What do you want? What do you want 2019 to look like? What do you want the universe to give you? What do you want to feel? How do you want to feel empowered?

My Word for 2019

The word that I chose for 2019 is freedom. Freedom from constraints of what it means to be a creative. Freedom from the wife and mother archetypes. Freedom from things that don’t light me up. Freedom from self imposed guilt and doubt. Freedom from anything that isn’t high vibe. And most importantly for me… freedom to unapologetically be Lauren. To be me.

So. I want you to share this with your friends. We all have at least a dozen creative online friends that need help walking through this. It doesn’t look like the stereotypical. It just needs to be this easy and simple. Share this episode. Send your friends a link. People that you trust!


Just a couple of quick things… moving forward with coffee chats and lives and all of those things they are not going to be scheduled. They are not going to be an every week thing. They will not be an every other week thing. They are going to happen as they come. What I have found is when I try to create a schedule and try to make it all happen, it doesn’t really ever feel right. I always end up going on a wicked tangent anyway because that is when I start talking about what needs to be said collectively for the group.

I will still be doing lives just like this! They are just not going to be scheduled. I will do my best to post a reminder at least 24 hours in advance. But you will also start to see more card reveals. How many of you have been loving that? How many of you have no clue what I’m talking about? I’ve been getting the feeling that you do love them and they have been helping you without you even realizing is. So I am going to continue to do more of those. 

I have had a couple of you ask because I have since opened up my packages and working with me one on one. Those of you who asked about my packages and what not, you saw that the pricing was going to change come January 1st. That does not mean you will not be able to work with me come January 1st. It just means the pricing changes January 1st. I offer two different packages. Three sessions working with me or six sessions working with me. If you want the best price and have been meaning to hop on the radar with me, now is the time. The real deal.

I just had someone say to me the other day, “All I asked my husband for for Christmas, was you”. I don’t know how to feel about this! Am I a song?

Lauren Dragon-Cook: I’m so excited for this! So excited to be able to do this for you all today. Welcome! Today we are going to do something a little bit different and give you all a bit of clarity and insight into what is going on in your business. You will get to have your questions answered in real time. And if you are catching the replay, don’t worry! You will still get to have some insight and clarity into your business because the universe does this weird thing where you hear things exactly in the timing you need to hear it. Any message you receive during the replay is intended for you as well.

I want to dive right in. I want to try to really quickly pick up on your energy. See what is going on and try to give you some clarity and insight. If you have a particular question or hurdle or block… let me know! Otherwise what I am going to do for you all… often times people will hop on my LIVES or catch the replay and they don’t have a particular question. They just want to get some overall insight. That is amazing.

The Spread

With that all being said, one way I do that is by pulling a quick spread. What I want you guys to do is think of something that is going on in your business right now. Maybe something you are struggling with, something you need an answer to. Something you need some guidance outside of yourself towards. Think of that. Have that in your mind and then select 1, 2, or 3.

Whatever card ends up coming up for whatever number you selected, that will give you insight to your question to your block. Right now, I don’t know if you are aware, right now Venus is in retrograde and then the very same day it goes direct, guess what? Mercury is going into retrograde. So what does that mean? That means we are going to be kind of… you might experience a funk for the next couple of weeks. That is okay. What you need to do and understand is anytime Mercury goes into retrograde it will bring up things for you that need to be let go of or healed or they are things you just need to pay attention to. Just want to throw that out there.

You are hoping on for a reason. Anything that comes out of my mouth is divinely guided. So select 1, 2, or 3.

The very first card… relax the hold of darkness and be a cause.

  • This will mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. However I think this has something to do with the inner critic. This moment in your life requires courage. You are being asked to allow yourself out of one level of known reality and into the next level of higher voltage reality. To access this reality you have to leave from known waters. Others may think you’re crazy for doing so. You have to leave behind the dark wavy grip of hesitation, procrastination, second guessing, and the belief you have to do everything on your own. 

This is a brand new deck to me so I am not as familiar and well versed in it as my other ones. This is a heavy one though. We are all in a moment of major up-leveling. What does that mean? Right now if you are listening to this, you are in a period of transition. Just sitting with this and being okay with it. Just being okay with what you are currently doing. You will know when the time is right to make the next step. To jump into the light. It is not right now.

This is definitely heavy but it is a uplifting kind of heavy. Calling out the elephant in the rom but then you are going to be taking care of that elephant. It is bringing it to light.

Number twos… funny little story.

I didn’t know this deck existed until I went to Chicago. The first thing we did when we got into the workshop was to pull a card and I chose this deck: Sacred Rebels Oracle. It is a beautiful deck but I had never worked with it before. The card I selected was this one… she feels, she knows.

  • An illumination is erupting from within you as a vision that is bringing what was once obscured into clarity. This is not likely to happen as a blindly shocking light, but as a more of a softer gentler knowing. It is like knowing something without understanding exactly how or when you came to know it. This insight will assist you and you are asked to honor it. You will know which insight it is at the right time. Your heart will tell you. You are therefore being asked to rely on the clarity that is coming to you now or has just recently come. Gently and firmly from that place of knowing into act and take your next steps forward. This oracle comes to you with guidance, particularly about long range or long term developments. Something that is far bigger than the immediate situation, an issue or moment is of importance. Although you will only have a dim sense of that possibility at best. This oracle brings you specific guidance. The situations in your current life are particularly geared towards a more specific manifestation that is coming to you, according to your life path and purpose. This is a stage of preparation and of building a foundation that will hold you strong and centered as your creative journey unfolds and your life path becomes ever more brilliant and luminous. So keeping plugging away, remain patient, but most of all be hopeful and trust in the light you see ahead of you. For it is the light that is within you simply revealed more fully and all that is happening now is happening to that end.

So. Yeah. You know! You know! I don’t how else to describe it. You know that you know. Right now you need to take the time to prepare. It is not about looking to the next step, it is about creating the foundation, building the base in which you are going to them build up the blocks. It is not about moving onto the next step. It is about making sure what you are doing right now is damn solid.

Number three…  beyond the mind of a heart beat.

  • You have to let go some of the chaos you are experiencing right now. It almost feels like you are getting swept up in a tornado. With that… getting swept up you are seeing things from a different perspective but it is making it inflated. Making a mountain out of a molehill. This is not in a mean way, but you are kind of allowing your mind to guide you right now so what this card is saying to you… beyond the mind of a heartbeat. You need to start leading from your heart. Maybe you recently made a decision in your business and you are second guessing yourself. Maybe you are suck on the strategies and planning, but you are losing sight of what is most important. That is the passion. That is the truth.

Stop the chaos. Stop the craziness. Stop the outer goings on. Put that all on hold. You know what you are supposed to be doing, but you are not listening to your own self.

Final Card

I hope that this helped. I want to choose one last card because I feel there needs to be one last punch.

Boom… seeing the true you.

  • This is for everybody that stayed and watched and listened. We are in a period right now energetically speaking it is time to get rid of the BS. It is time to drop that baggage off at baggage claim and never pick it back up. If you have been afraid of being yourself. If you have ben afraid of really stand in your truth and light, embody who you know you were meant to be but you aren’t sure how to get there… now is the time to do it. The universe will have you back now more than ever. If you are wondering “do I take that first step”… just be honest and be in alignment with who you know you are supposed to be.

  • This oracle has come to you rather because you have been putting too much faith in the reflections others have of you. To the point you might not be honoring all that you are and all that you are becoming, because you believe too little of yourself. 

Anytime a wild card or umbrella card comes out, it is the overall encompassing theme. Pay attention to this. It is almost like this card is saying you have been staring at your reflection for so long that you don’t even know what your true face looks like anymore. Like a mirror but the mirror is cloudy and jaded. So either wipe that mirror clean or take the time to actually truly look at yourself.

In Conclusion

Q: Brianne… What do I need to do next in my business?

A: You need to be present in the now. I am being shown you writing in a book or journal. You need to actually take the time to focus on the now. Because you are missing a lot of the lessons that are trying to be conveyed. Trying to be shown to you, by focusing on the next step. Whatever it is you’re working on, instead of doing it half-assed… do it well. Master it. That is what I am being told. That is what I am feeling. Master that… because you don’t need to worry about the future. You just need to worry about the why. You need to worry about the why and what. You need to focus more on what you are doing now. Stop trying to focus on the next thing.

Q: Marissa… I am trying to start my first business and I keep getting second thoughts I won’t succeed. Am I just being self conscious?

A: Yes. It is not that you are being self conscious it is that you are allowing fear. It is activating your self sabatore. What that means is you are scared of both failure and success. I know that might seem a little silly. You are allowing that to consume you. You are allowing the inner critic that we all have to come through. What I would say to that, if you had this passion and drive and this wanting/need to create something and start something… focus on that. Go back to that. Don’t let the fear of not knowing how to do this and this and this, stop you from being able to continue on. I’m seeing this almost inner battle happening. Two forces basically playing against each other. What you need to do is put them to rest and that way you will be able to move forward.

Q: Bev… I am getting inquires for weddings but when it comes to booking they are backing out for one reason or another. Is it me or is it them?

A: It has to do with two things. One they are not your ideal client, but more so they are sensing… When you are unsure of yourself, when you aren’t feeling worthy, that energy comes out. Whether or not you realize it. It comes across though and to other people as being unsure of yourself. What I want to say to you and coming through really strongly… you need to write down a piece of paper… you need to write the words “I Am Worthy”. You need to put that somewhere you will see it every single day. You need to remind yourself of this. Two things need to happen. A) we need to get the ideal clients flowing back in, but it is good you have inquiries coming in because it means you can make the tiny little tweaks in your own behaviors and things so that way you are going to be able to basically change those clients that are inquiring to your ideal clients. But B) invite your ideal clients to find you. You can easily do that by saying “I can now clear the passage, I can now clear the space for my ideal clients to find me easily now”. That is it. Just think it. You are creating the bubble for those people that need to be finding you, to find you. Sometimes we stop our own growth and continuing. You are not blocking yourself, but you are also not valuing yourself as much as you should be.

Q: Sheeron… I am starting my business and I feel like I have so many blocks. One of them is that I don’t feel good enough and telling people I am good at what I do. 

A: So as I sit with that…I feel like I can’t breathe. It feels like you have some stuff, I don’t want to call it baggage. It is just experiences you have experienced previously. Childhood, young adult, traumatic experiences that haven’t been closed on. It has nothing to do with the business, it has everything to do though with being able to stand in your truth and own who you are and embrace your light and passion. You are not going to be able to do that because it feels like you have just a couple of black holes that are sucking all of that from you. But also I am being told you get up in your head. That is also because of past experiences. 

Q: Ellen… I’m wanting to start my business would like to intern or work for someone else first to get solid experience, but for 5 years now I haven’t been able to even volunteer my time for free. Beginning to feel like maybe this is a sign I should not pursue it or does this mean I should just jump in?

A: It has more to do with the fact you are… when we have something we really want, when we have something is either a goal and we are close to achieving it… what we tend to do as humans is we tend to sabotage the shit out of it. We can come up with any number of reasons that X, Y, and Z won’t work. It has nothing to do with the fact you are “too busy”, it is that you are almost… I don’t want to say it like this but “too intimidated” or worried or anxious about what could possibly happen. You would much rather stay in the comfort zone than take that leap. But you need to take that leap. You need to cut the chords that are sucking you dry, all of the obligations you have… you need to just leap. I keep seeing a net... you will get caught. It has nothing to do with your own schedule your own time. It has to do with a matter of whether or not you really want to go outside of your comfort zone.

Q: Brianne… With the situation I am in, are they going to be understanding or is there a shit storm coming my way? Already contacted a lawyer to be prepared, but maybe I am over thinking it.

A: Yes, but you need to make a point to set that intention. You need to put that in motion. We have a new moon coming up, it is the perfect time to do it. Set that intention that this situation will resolve itself in the best interests for all parties involved. Write it on a piece of paper, fold it, leave it somewhere, and then let it go. That is your spurring and stemming it into action.

Q: Bonnie… Since I ended up going at this alone I feel so overwhelmed with clients who have dried up or just straight up disappeared. I’m starting to feel like I’m grinding my gears and its not going anywhere. I am starting to think maybe I need to just quit.

A: Its not that you need to quit, its that you need to refresh. Its that you need to refresh and start a new. You need to start over. I want to encourage you… new moons, setting intentions, this is a perfect time to cleanse and renew all that. You need to start thinking that you aren’t just trying to maintain this business as it once was, you need to start realizing that you have the power and you are in the driver seat and you can create whatever it is you want. Maybe that is a rebrand for you. Maybe that is calling it something else. But just shifting and cleansing that energy that is wrapped up in this, is going to be huge for you. Also too, knowing to trust your own intuition and knowing what signs to look for is also going to be huge for you. I just saw all kind of stuff for you. I would encourage you to start that process. Because that is also going to really make sure you are creating from a space of truth and creating the vacuum for it to all happen. Right now it is also like you got a hand-me-down car. You wanted this brand new SUV, fully loaded and then you got your older brothers 1992 Honda civic. You can’t picture yourself all kinds of pimped out if you are rolling around in a 1992 civic. You have to make the imagery and what is happening align, then that is when it will really take off.

Q: Sheeron… So how do I proceed? I have been working on letting things go.

A: It has deep roots. Its almost like a vine. I just want to make this clear… I can only see what your guides allow me to see. I am just getting a feeling. The feeling I’m getting is it is so intertwined in everything it is going to take some… work. You have to do some cleansing and clearing and healing. But again, that has nothing to do with your business succeeding or not or whether or not you should start your business. It has to do with the longevity of it. If you want it to be sustainable, we have to work on that. One way you can do this is by tapping into your own intuition. By really sitting with the things you need to let go. This is something too I work one-on-one with my own clients on. If you want to hop on a discovery call with me, I am more than happy to do that. Starting to think about the things that need to be let go of, but you also need to heal that space. It is one thing to let a kite go, but it is another thing to know what you are going to do with the string you have left over. Are you going to throw it away or keep it? That is healing.

Q: Ellen… I have taken courses but am afraid of what I don’t know. That is why I would like to work for someone else first. But I haven’t found anyone who will help me. I’m also afraid of jumping in and starting…

A: You know all you need to do to get started. You are going to stumble and trip and that is okay. That is part of the process we all go through regardless of whether or not we intern with someone else, regardless of whether or not we have a degree in it. You will stumble in the beginning. I want you to know you have everything you need to get started. Now when it is time to scale and time to grow, lets revisit it. But right now you’ve got this. You’ve got an entire group, community of people that are here cheering you on. This is a safe space. This is a safe space for growth and transformation to happen. I literally will scan people that come into the group to make sure there is no ill-will or ill-intentions. I take the time to do that because I truly believe in community and fostering that love. We need more spaces like that, now more than ever.

Q: Brianne… So yes going into IPS? Just need that permission.

A: Again, its being present in the moment. I can’t make this up… you need to be present and focused on what you are doing now. Not the next step. So no… your guides are not giving you permission.

I think you are all in for a teat today. I am pretty stoked about this talk. For the month of October the theme is in preparation for engagement and holiday season. But today I really felt like I needed to talk a little bit more on a deeper level. I felt like you all needed to hear some hard truths and some tough love. So that is kind of why I decided to throw this curveball in there today.

Today we are going to be talking about why clients aren’t banging down your door, why they are not showing up for you in the way you feel they should be. Maybe you feel you are doing everything right, maybe you feel you are pumping out content or showing up on social media… you feel you are checking off all those boxes but for some reason the clients aren’t showing up the way that you’d like them too. Does this resonate?

We are going to be talking about why those clients probably aren’t showing up for you. It has more to do with the way you are kind of living your life. To be honest. If you are living more in a state of worry and wondering where the next thing will happen, wondering where you will be able to connect the dots down the road, if you are living for the future, or if you are living in more of a state of trust in the present. Maybe you’re really focusing on gratitude. This may be something you have heard about on a TED talk, it could be something you’ve heard about anywhere… but I keep getting these kits lately. These downloads and pings from my guides saying to me “your people, your community don’t need another strategy, they don’t need to know another technique, they need to actually step back and we need to take a look at some of their stuff.”

I can almost guarantee you almost everyone on here has in some way shape or form has repelled a customer from them simply because of your own beliefs and how you saw yourself.

How Many Of You…

First things first, if this is you… if what I am about to say resonates with you… I want you to tell me! Number 1: How many of you feel your clients emotions on a really strong level? It is almost like you are experiencing exactly what they are. You are feeling the emotion behind what they are saying or what they are concerned or worried about?

Number 2: If this is you… also tell me! How many of you often worry too much? You worry about things that are maybe out of your control. Or maybe you worry about the littlest of things.

Number 3: How many of you tend to not see the true value of your work to see the true worth of your work, because it just comes naturally to you? Because it is something you do day in and day out. It is something you think “oh wait you don’t know how to do this?”. And then you get confused because they don’t.

Ladies and gentlemen, the reason why we are talking about this again is because I felt really strongly last night… I hadn’t come up with a topic for todays conversation, there was a reason for that. I didn’t start to really dig deep until last night because I felt I needed to put it on pause and look at it when we got closer. So much shit is changing, guys. Whether or not you are new to energy and the universe and universal laws, it doesn’t matter. If you are listening or watching this right now, you are living on this planet. With that comes certain rules and laws that we just kind of either don’t acknowledge or recognize or we don’t care. The people that actually take the time to start to learn about these different things and apply them to their life and business, are the ones that start to see significant growth.

Trust vs. Worry

Let me ask you some real questions… I want you to be honest with yourself.

In life, in general, do you feel like you are living in a perpetual state of worry? You don’t know where your next client will come from. You don’t know what the future holds for you. You aren’t clear on what your goals are. You are just riding the wave. Maybe you don’t feel like you don’t know what your purpose is, genuinely. Maybe you feel lost and lacking legit clarity. You don’t know where you should be really going. That keeps you up at night!

Or maybe… you are living more often than not in a state of trust. You know without a shadow of a doubt you are taken care of. You are going to be okay. The clients are going to come. You know you are going to get clarity soon on whatever direction you are going to be taking in your business.  You know what areas personally you should be working on.

Do you trust more than you worry? Or do you worry more than you trust? I want to know. You are not alone. There is a reason why I am talking about this. There is a reason why this is todays episode and talk. So often so many of my clients will come to me and say “I already have my systems set up and I’m doing well marketing and my SEO is on point… why am I not getting the clients?”

Let me be 100% honest guys… that has nothing to do with business. It doesn’t. The law of attraction means that whatever you put out there you are going to get more of. If you are living in a constant state of worry, then the universe will show up and give you more scarcity. It will give you more things to help you worry more.

If though, you are just going to leave it to chance, you are going to trust that everything will work out exactly the way it is supposed to. If you are living in that mindset, the universe will show up for you. It will give you the answers and the end result you have been wanting. But when you start to really worry, it stops that from happening. It stops that tidal wave, that surge of energy from happening.

I want to ask you guys, I posted this on my Instagram last night and it speaks to today. Have any of you ever worried yourself into a blessing or worried yourself into a solution? Me neither.

You have to take a step back and really think about what are you giving gratitude towards. Even if you are living right now and it is hard for you to get out of bed. Maybe some days are more difficult than others, maybe some days you just feel defeated and walk away from it all. I get that. I get there too sometimes. But even on those days, what are you grateful for? What are you giving thanks for?

In your business, maybe you aren’t exactly where you want to be… but right now you are growing. Especially if you are here. But even on the days when it is hard to find the good in things… you have a bed to sleep in. You have electricity. You have a phone. You have internet. You have hot water. You have air in your lungs. You have tiny things to be grateful for. When you start to call out those tiny things and write them down… you start to find the good outwardly. You start to see it on a much larger scale. You are then able to find the silver lining in any situation.

What ends up happening in the long run is the universe shows the fuck up for you. You are living in a state of gratitude. You are thankful for the things that you have and the universe wants to give more of that. It wants you to feel that way always.

Is this making sense? I want to make sure because I feel I am only literally scratching the bare bones surface of this. This is the foundation. What I am talking about sets the foundation and tone for manifesting. I have had many of you guys reach out to me asking how you manifest. How do I get started? If you aren’t here in this place I am talking about and living in a state of trust, it won’t happen for you.

Story Time - Manifestation is Real

I want to paint a picture for you of what it is like to live in a state of trust instead of worry. Last winter my laptop literally was about to self combust. It was overheating and it was only 7 years old. I knew I needed to replace it. Did I have the money at the time? No I didn’t. It was slow season for me and slow season for my husband. So obviously we are not going to worry about buying a computer at that moment. But after months of saving a little but I was only about $400 or $500 short. I started to worry… “where am I gonna get it from…” I started to do what we all do and I started to get up in my head. I started to worry.

Then I took a step back and reminded myself that it was stupid! I don’t need to worry about this, it will work out the way it is supposed to work out. I flipped the script and I said to myself… I am going to get this computer by the end of the week. It was clear! I am getting it by the end of the week. I don’t know how it is going to happen and I don’t need to know how. But it is going to happen.

A day or two goes by, no changes. Another day… no major changes. And then on the third day I go out to my mailbox and inside there is a check from State Farm Insurance from 2011. Because we overpaid by $287 back in 2011. Now… mic drop that one. A couple of things I want to point out though.

  1. We no longer have State Farm. We switched.

  2. We moved.

State of Trust in Business

How it got to me, beyond me! Do I need to know? No. There was that piece. Then later that night all of the sudden I felt called to check Dubsado and see if anyone has signed up under me. I love Dubsado, but I don’t talk about it to make money. I talk about it because I feel it is a solution for so many people who run creative businesses. I have had Dubsado at this point for a year and a half. I had never checked. So I checked. $410 was just sitting waiting for me in my affiliate account. Had it been there all along? Yeah, but had I stopped to think about it when I was in my cloud of worry? No.

So what happened? I was able to get quiet with myself and say “You know, whatever is going to happen is going to happen”. There was all the money I needed plus enough to get me a pair of earbuds. That is me painting the picture of trust versus worry.

Worry took me months and months and months of planning or stashing away or feeling like a chipmunk putting the nuts in my tree. And then when I realized it was dumb… I decided to trust. It happened guys, I can’t make this stuff up.

Again, these are the types of things business owners don’t pause to think about. When was the last time you took stock and inventory of what was going on inside?

I had someone comment on my Instagram and it was in regards to collecting feedback from you all. I asked when the last time was that you served your audience instead of thinking you know what they want and what they are experiencing? For so many people it was such a good reminder. I had someone in the comments say to me “I’ve asked but I’ve never gotten an answer. I’ve offered incentives and I’ve never gotten an answer. I don’t know why.”

So really quickly, I tapped in to see what was going on and it took me all of 3 seconds to see she is in a constant state of worry. Living in that state of worry is repelling people from her. What I’m saying goes much deeper than just how to run a successful business. What I am saying can help you in life.

To recap… your clients aren’t going to start showing up to if unless you do! Unless you are showing up and living more in a state of trust versus worry and constant “what is next!?”. If you can trust that the universe has got you, then you are going to be okay. To take that one step further… you have to make that conscious decision. You have to say what it is you want. You have to say or write it down or making that decision or setting that goal… you have to say “I want this. I am worthy of this”. You don’t have to worry about how its going to happen, that is the universe. If you just set the intention I guarantee you the universe will show up if you are living in a state of trust.

To dig deep and uncover the shit that nobody else talks about to help you grow your business quickly and efficiently. You already have the answers inside of you of what you are supposed to be doing. Engagement and Holiday Season Prep

Today we are going to be talking a little bit about the upcoming engagement season that is upon us. I wouldn’t say it is mostly for the wedding industry but it is centered for creatives to those involved in the wedding world. It’s also applicable to people that have products that they sell, if they have a product based shop for example, you might make personalized coffee mugs. It doesn’t mean you have to be a wedding industry professional however, its kinda where we are going with today’s topic. 

How many of you are ready for wedding season?

Let’s Dive In

According the Wedding Wire and The Knot, there are 10 incredibly popular days that people get Engaged. When do you think those are? A hint: They are between November and February. Here’s a few of them:

  • Christmas Eve

  • Christmas

  • New Years Eve

  • New Years Day

  • Valentines Day

9 of the 10 most popular days fall between November through the middle of February, with 40% of couples are getting engaged during this time frame. Here are some things you should be thinking about when you are looking at your calendar:

  • What you should be posting and when.

  • Most couples start their planning 7-10 months prior to their actual wedding day. 

  • Your summer wedding clients are going to be looking for their wedding vendors during this time. 

  • This will be the biggest burst you will see of inquiries and people reaching out and searching for their vendors. Now is when you want to start amping up your efforts.

Where Your Focus Should Be

What should you be focusing on, what should you be doing to get you noticed?

One of the biggest things you need to figure out if you haven’t already is WHO is your ideal client. If you truly in your heart of hearts just are kind of taking anyone who books you or you're not sure what your favorite person to work with or your ideal client looks like. Now is the time to figure that out. 

I like to think of this time of year as the Wedding Industry Professionals New Year. Its the fresh start. We are wrapping up the majority of our jam packed full schedule. Now is when you are looking to fill up your calendar for the following season. You want to really make an effort to figure out who your favorite person is to work with. Think of your favorite client. What made them your favorite client to work with? What was so fantastic about them?

Now Let’s Get The Client You Envision Working With!

Direct your attention towards these things before you start creating your content and amping up your marketing efforts to get found. You can’t start creating content without knowing who you are creating content for. 

A few different things you can be doing is repurposing content you’ve already created. Blog posts you've gotten a lot of traffic for. Maybe you have actually tracked what some of your best performing posts on your Instagram or Facebook, those are the ones you want to be recycling. You don’t always have to be creating something new. Don't reinvent the wheel. If you talked about some element of planning back in June or Hiring a photographer or what flowers were in season back then. Re-use it. Theres no reason why you can’t. Just switch it up a little bit. Going through your old content will really save you a lot of time too. It’s stressful enough wondering how you are going to be completely booked. 

Tell A Story

Posts that work really well are stories of past clients. Stories of past clients speak to a lot of different points. Did people have a good experience working with you? OR are you brand new?

They want to make sure they are going to have a good experience with you. The random flashes of past clients will really engage them and bring them in. You don’t have to do testimonials, you could go live on your Instagram or Facebook and talk about your favorite wedding of the season. OR your curveball wedding, you ran out of film, the bride lost her bouquet. How did you turn it around, how did you fix it? These are the types of things people want to see or know how capable you will be if things are thrown at you like this. 

Showing text message testimonials, is raw, its real, its uncut. You can screenshot these and share them on your social accounts. These are things that I talk to so many clients about, they ask if its okay to post things like that? You want to get their permission first. But they are going to let you post it. 

Give Them Valuable Information That Makes You Unforgettable

Hidden tips, hidden tricks. Like what you should be looking for Im not talking about what everyone has on their blogs “5 tips how to find a wedding planner”. I’m talking more about what is something that hasn’t already been done a thousand times. One of your brides or grooms managed to save $7000 by doing this one thing. What did they do, how did they do it? What app did they use? What tool did they use? What website did they use? What different way did they look at it? This is the gold nugget your clients want. They want to know the valuable information that normally they would have to pay someone for. I’m not saying give it all away. They just need to know that if they hire you, you are going to show up and you are going to bring the value. They need to know this and this is how you are going to showcase it without coming across desperate. 

Create A Unique Experience For Your Couple

If you are a photographer, making sure they have things like their wedding invitation the day of the wedding. Maybe creating a What to bring on your wedding day PDF. I’d love to be able to photograph XYZ. These are things that we forget to mention when we are caught up in the swing of things. But its something that clients would love. 

Brand new perfume, brand new cologne. Its going to remind them of their wedding day. Its going to remind them how special it is. It will even make for good wedding photos. Feel free to use these ideas, tag me! Tag #creativebosslife I want to see you using these things!


Use Canva to create a pretty PDF of your lists. Share it! Facebook stories, Instagram Stories. Post it! You will look like a rockstar. This is how you reduce reuse recycle.

You want to be providing content, information, valuable tidbits without any expectation of return. I promise you it will come back.

Really talk about your brand story. People actually care how long you’ve been doing this. Tell it in a story form, What did you do before you were a ______. It makes you relatable. You are coming for a genuine place. Paint a picture of who you are and what you stand for and what you believe in, and what you're passionate about. But make it relatable!

Get Creative!

Some of my favorite engagement sessions are when you randomly decide to hike a mountain. You have ideas, you aren’t just going to take them in another random park. Showcase that you have done this before, its not your first rodeo. You’re not just another testimonial. Showcase your past work in a creative new way. 

Stay on Top of Your Content by Sticking to a Plan

The whole point in coming up with a content plan is really staying on top of mind with them. They are going to be starting to search for vendors. They are possibly going to get engaged in a few months. They are going to remember those little things that you have showcased that they want to feel or experience when they are starting their new journey. 

Repurpose Content!!

You can search Creative Boss Life for Batch Content, 6 Months Worth of Content in a Day, Creating a content schedule. These Podcasts can all help you with ways you can repurpose your content and help you figure out a schedule. You can really only create 4 new pieces of content and you can have it play off of each other. Day 1 on Facebook and then repost with a different image Day 15 on Instagram, etc.

And as a reminder, don’t get so caught up in feeling like you always have to be posting on Instagram. The successful ones are the ones who are engaging on Instagram. You don’t have to be constantly posting! How do you do this? By searching your hashtags and commenting and liking those posts to engage with your ideal clients. It will make you visible to your ideal client.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year…to be on top of SEO!!

One thing you should always be focusing on but especially right now is your SEO. How are you going to be found on search? You have to have a schedule to that too. A lot of that comes with blogging and renaming your images. This episode is not for SEO, but this is the time you want to start building your SEO to get recognized and found. I have plenty of free documents I will link for you. Or you can go to and I have two courses you can take. 

If you want something short term, social media will do that. If you want something once and get immediate results SEO is where its at. That wraps it up, lets get to our Q & A’s.

Amy: I don’t have much content to repurpose being newer, any advice?

Lauren: Okay so you are going to have to start from scratch. You do because I know you, have styled shoots and photos from past styled shoots. You don’t have to always be talking about past clients you can talk about past experiences in other work place situations. Horror stories that turned out to be okay. It speaks to you and your character and your ability to problem solve. Think of other situations in your life that can play a role in this.

Jamie: Does using something like Hootsuite help to plan and or help to schedule future posts? Is it a timesaver?

Lauren: I don’t have a whole lot of personal experience with Hootsuite. I use Trello, it outlines the content, the ideas that i have and let me schedule my content for Instagram, Facebook, etc. Facebook likes organic content posted straight from your Facebook page, so you can plan outside FB but copy and paste while you are logged into your page. 

Iconosquare is very helpful for Instagram posting. What works best for me is when I plan out my posts on my content calendar. Batch day content episode is money, I will link it because it will definitely help you with this. 

Mia: Does Wix website have good SEO

Lauren: If you had asked 3 years ago this would be a no, but over the last few years it has gotten better. You need to do more than just download a plugin. You have to connect things on the back end that are working together. the initial foundation happens outside your website and then. Its not so much the actual platform it is the setting up behind the scenes that needs to happen in order to get good SEO.

Brittany: I never really realized how much amazing information you have available in the resources area of your website.

Lauren Dragon-Cook: Good morning everybody. How are we all doing on this beautiful Tuesday? Todays episode we are going to be chatting about all of my best and worst investments I have ever made throughout my entrepreneurial journey. Its going to be good. You are going to get the real, the raw, the no sugar coating. I will be sharing with you all of my investments, the good, the bad, the ugly. What actually helped me, what I probably could’ve don without… there is going to be no sugar coating on this one.

I have been doing this thing, I have been an entrepreneur since 2010. I have not worked for a company, I have not worked for a corporation... I have worked form home since 2010. Obviously it has changed over the course of the last 8 years, but I definitely have invested in a couple of things. 

One other thing I want to quickly say before diving into the bad… I have pretty much tried every single software, platform, program, service that is available out there for creatives. Why? Because I am very much the type of person, that I will absolutely listen to you and what you have to say about a service or program, but I am the type of person that has to experience it myself. I am that person. I need to know first hand. With that being said, I am not kidding. I have tried every single email software, almost every single client management software, I have tried all the design software’s. Yeah, you name it I have probably tried it.

I used to have a nickname… “Apps”. It used to be my nickname.

The Bad and the Worst

Let’s dive in.

Number 1: Let’s start easy… if you are in the wedding industry then you are obviously familiar with he Wedding Wire and the Knot. I have had free service s on both. I have paid for Wedding Wire. If that is your sole marketing means… you are doing it wrong. Wedding Wire in the time I was paying for it and optimized my account for all the SEO, I did everything that they say to do to set it up. I didn’t get a single real lead. Not one. I didn’t get a single lead. I did get a fake lead. I know it was a fake lead because in the way that the message read… it was literally one day after I contacted Wedding Wire saying “hey I’ve done everything you’ve said, I’m not getting anything”. They told me it just takes time. Finally I talked with Peter, (love you) and I just said “listen, I’m not trying to say Wedding Wire is terrible, but I have done x, y, and z… I have waited for months and I haven’t gotten a single lead.” Then they let me break the contract. Now this is information I am sharing publicly. Am I supposed to be? I don’t know. But to be completely honest, I am a resource for you.

You can still get all the reviews and awards and recognition, you don’t have to have a paid account in order to do so. It is absolutely a business builder if you are looking for accolades. 

Number 2: I’m going to ruffle some feathers but that is okay… Bridal Expos. Bridal Shows. Didn’t matter if it was a $1,000 booth in Boston or a $200 booth in New Hampshire… it never produced sufficient, quality, “yes I want to work with these people because they are my ideal clients”, brides or grooms ever. I’ll tell you why. The people that are going to wedding shows these days… we live in a digital age. Everything is online. When we got married Pinterest didn’t exist. The age, the bride of today is not going to shows in order to find vendors. They have Google and friends for that. Then on the other side, the ones that do go to the shows and expos are solely looking for handouts, for discounts, for the free gifts… for the swag bags. They are going for the free shit. 

Here is another thing… last week I saw that someone had left a review from Canada and gave our Podcast one star and the reason being because swearing is so unprofessional. And so what I want to say to that person is you are going to spend your energy and go out of your way to leave a review, a one star review, when you could’ve spent that same amount of energy and unfollowed the group. Don’t spread that negativity. I’m not going to censor myself.

The one thing I have gotten from clients time and time again is them coming back to me and saying “but if don’t do the show someone else will replace me”. Okay, let them replace you because then you don’t have to deal with those budget brides. You are looking for quality. You are not looking for quantity. You know how much of a headache it can be if they are not a good fit for you.

Number 3: Infusionsoft. This will lead me into a couple of other things but, if any of you are looking for an email platform or a way to send out newsletters… Infusionsoft is not it. When I joined I was paying $240 a month. It can be great if you are running a seven figure business and have all kinds of sales funnels and all of that stuff. But if you just need the basic “I need to send out an email to my group”, Infusionsoft is not it.

It is called Confusionsoft for a reason. It is too much of a platform for the majority of people that are listening to this podcast.

Number 4: This wasn’t necessarily money spent, however it was space in my mind. All of the worlds free opt-ins and downloads and webinars and workbooks… all of the things. Yes they absolutely are there to help you and give you information, however 9 times out of 10 if you do not know the true purpose of a free-bee it is to get someone’s email. Once you are in the email sequence you are going to get sold to. You will feel the product is the solution. Let me tell you… I have no in the last 8 years found by getting some opt-in or some download… I have never found a product at the end of that that changed my business. If you feel like your desktop looks like a murder scene from a horror movie with all of the carnage and opt-ins… if that clutter is starting to weigh on you… delete it. Unsubscribe.

Number 5: All the courses that I purchased over the years and didn’t finish. All the courses I bought and finished and was still left with questions. All of the courses that promised it would teach me how to save the world and rescue all the starving children and it didn’t teach me that. All the courses. 

Anyone can create a course. Yes some of the best of the best have courses. However they don’t necessarily have an education degree. They don’t necessarily have the means or qualifications to teach you in a specific way. If you are looking at a course and you are unsure… if you keep going back and forth, chances are you can weigh on the side of “its not going to do a whole lot for you”. If you are feeling this course will be the one, it is solving a specific problem for you… then okay! Maybe it is a winner. From my personal experience, all the courses… there have only been a couple that handout and taught me something of value that I still now practice or do.

If they have a moneyback guarantee that tells you a couple of things. It tells you they truly stand behind their product, they are not out to ghost you, they aren’t out just for a profit, they genuinely want to help. 

Courses are not the solution. Am I going to tell you the solution? Well its different for everybody. But there is a solution for you.

Number 6: Facebook ads. Last year alone I spent $1,800 on Facebook ads. Let that sink in. Yes, I did have somebody running my Facebook ads… so on top I was paying someone money to do that. I was probably looking at about $5,000 on Facebook ads. People that you are trying to target can be done in different ways. But since we hear about these ads all the time, we think it will be the end all be all solution. What I will say, I ended up getting maybe 200 subscribers on my email list. I would have to assume maybe 40 of them are still around.

Facebook ads are necessarily the solution for small business owners. It does work for some, but when we are a service based business it can be kind of hard. This is my experience.

Number 7: Last and not least of the worst… which ironically is also one of the best. A Mastermind that I joined last May. When I say high touch, I am talking five figures. More than I have ever spent on a vehicle. I joined. This Mastermind was supposed to teach me the ins and outs of sales funnels and how to do Facebook ads and what it was going to take for me to find my ideal audience. All of these things.

I even went so far as to pull cards for myself. I asked, I contemplated, and meditated. The answer was a resounding yes. Now, I could’ve talked myself out of it, and I almost did. But I joined because the person who ran this Mastermind was incredibly good with advertising. 

Long story short, I am now one of over a dozen people that are no longer in it. I don’t think it is offered anymore. This person has since changed directions. It ended badly. When I say badly, I mean I remember having a one on one call with this individual and saying to them (I’m being 100% transparent so take it or leave it), “Listen I don’t even have enough money to buy my children Christmas presents. We haven’t purchased groceries in three weeks and you are still expecting me to pay you X number of dollars when we are a terrible fit and I’m not learning what it was that you had told me I would learn.” The person looked me in the eye and said “yeah, this is business”.

Fast forward a little bit, the day after Christmas… I don’t think I’ve told anybody this story but it needs to be told. The truth of the matter is there are many many many coaches or mastermind groups that I have heard this happening with. Many mentors that we love but don’t know about it because it is behind the scenes. Here is the best part…

The day after Christmas collections started calling me. I would receive a call a day. It lasted for right up until the second week of February. One of the voicemails that I received was speaking to the fact that my father was in the hospital for cardiac issues. This is collections, guys. I don’t know how they found this shit out but they did. The voicemail was more or less a threat. I have saved them all. You cannot do that legally. Calls continued.

It is now behind me. On the flipside… I will Segway into my best investment. I have come to realize, accept, internalize, embrace, and moved on from the fact that that happened and it has also been one of the best investments I have made because I was able to find the silver lining. 

The Silver Lining

The silver lining is I was able to meet so many people that I never would’ve been able to. I was able to make connections with so many people that I would’ve never met. And we have lifted each other up. We cam together and banded together. It was a beautiful thing.

Is it why I joined the Masterminds? No. You shouldn’t have to find the silver lining and justify it that way. But it was truly one of the best things I could’ve done because it pushed me out of my comfort zone. That is the one thing so many business owners need. We stay stuck in our comfort zone and expect to grow and have a different outcome even though we are doing the same thing.

It was one of the best things that I could’ve done for myself because it taught me so many things. I don’t do sale funnels or Facebook ads in my business.  I don’t do those things because it is not me. It is not my brand or who I am as a person. I am here to serve you, I am not here to sell you.

The Best

Number 1: I should’ve done this sooner, but one of the best things I’ve done was to hire a copywriter. A copywriter for emails, for my about page, for my home page, for my services page. It is really hard to A) look at what it is you do from an objective stand point. I could not for the life of me explain what I actually did on my website. How do I explain all of this? It is something that isn’t really done. The closest terminology I have found to explain what I do is a “psychic business coach” and even then that is a terrible label and I don’t put that on myself. 

So I had to hire a copywriter and find someone that sounded like me and would be no question that I wrote it. It was an investment depending on what I had them do. However, if you can relive that weight… fuck yeah it is worth it!

Hiring a copywriter… it was tough. But the sooner you become clear on who you are serving and what you are offering… the sooner those clients will walk through the door. But if people don’t know what it is you do… they aren’t going to hire you. You have to remember two things when you are thinking about copy and whatever… I mean this in the sincerest way. People are dumb. Meaning you have to explain it to the in the simple form possible. And no body is going to be as proud of you as your momma. Meaning they don’t really care about you, they want to know what you can do for them.

Until you can internalize that, you can’t really grow or reach your ideal client.

Number 2: Hands down… in-person workshops that fuel my soul. Whether that is growing my own intuition and learning how to connect with my own inner knowing to connecting and learning business with other creative business owners to retreats where you just relax and learn a couple things. In-person workshops have hands down been some of the best. I have never regretted spending money of them. You are always going to learn something and get what you put in to it in return. If you go into it thinking open minded and you are just there to recharge… that is what you will get, But if you go into it thinking… I just need some money… that is all you will think about and you won’t be open to hearing the information or experience people are trying to offer. 

Number 3: Dubsado. It has been the best investment I could’ve ever made ever for my business. Why? The heart and soul the brain of running my business on auto piolet. I talk about automation, strategies, and workflows… but in reality it all happens because of Dubsado. It literally cut my work time I would say at least by 30% with my wedding planning business. 

If you are paying whatever a month, $25 a month to work 30% less… is worth it. If you are on the fence with signing up, I do have a coupon code that gives you 15% off the life of your subscription. Not just 20% off for one month. If you are looking to sign up, the code is WEDDINGBOSSLIFE.

Number 4: Tailwind. Its about $100 a year. If you want to get a coupon code for that, go to my website and find resources and you’ll find the link and you’ll get the coupon code directly applied. It is a Pinterest software. You schedule your “pins” to be going out at the optimal times and your audience then sees it. The beautiful thing about Pinterest is it looks like you’re constantly pinning. You don’t want to do 60 new pins all at once because if your audience isn’t on at 9am… guess what they won’t see those pins. Pinterest is the second largest search engine aside from Google. If you are looking to drive people to your website organically… Tailwind is an incredible way to do it.

Pinterest for me is the second biggest source of traffic to my website. Meaning people find me through Google and Pinterest. Those are my two biggest platforms.

When you do pin from Tailwind, make sure you are doing it form your actual URL. You don’t want to be behind the scenes on your website pinning stuff. People won’t be able to access it.

Number 5: Attending WPTI. This one is for my photographer friends. Going to that conference, if you are part of the video or photo realm, opened my eyes to so much more. It allowed me to meet those insta-famous people and see the actual person behind the mask. It was such a game changing experience for me and changed the complete path for the business I was working for. It was so innovative.

Number 6: Last but not least, I wanted to give this a bit more of a highlight. All of the intuitive workshops I have attended, they have always proven to be one of my biggest sources of growth for my own business. If you have a hobby, if you have something you just want to learn more about… do the workshop. The very first one I ever attended was back in 2013 and now I have incorporated it into my business. You never know where your path is truly going to lead you. If you had told me that I would’ve been teaching people how to tap into their own gift and strategize their business… I would’ve thought you were crazy.

Wrapping It Up

You are all helping to create something that doesn’t exist and change the course of business for everybody. The solution of your business looks different for everybody. No coach, your mastermind, no workshop is going to be that one solution for you. The solution lies within you. When you start to learn how to tap into your own intuition, you will get the answers you need, and the divine guidance from your own guide. You could pay $3,000 for a coach to tell you or you can find that answer for yourself. Its about learning how to tap into that so you can skyrocket and grow. 

That’s what I mean when I say you are helping to create this path that doesn’t exist because I have this feeling that I was put here to completely change the game. Courses aren’t the answer. Webinars aren’t the answer. It is already inside of you. It’s a matter of learning how to work with those things… then you will get all the answers you need.

The first question you should ask yourself when you are looking to start investing in something… is what is going to make me money. Where am I going to be able to regain my cost? You have to figure out a way that works for you.

Lauren Dragon-Cook: Welcome! If anyone else having a day that just feels totally like its supposed to be a Monday? I am.

I want to dive right in and not take up too much of your time. I so appreciate the fact you are here with me. I know how valuable time is. Especially for the momma’s who this is the first day of school. How many of us are drinking bloody mary’s or mimosa’s right now? Hell yes.

We are going to be talking about pricing for profits. Pricing is absolutely one of those topics that I cover with my one-on one clients within the first two sessions. It is something that about 90% of business owners are completely out of alignment with. They aren’t in alignment, congruent or balanced with what they should be charging and what they feel they are worth. That has a lot to do with underlying issues that again, I always uncover with you. You’re not just making these superficial changes to your pricing. It is one thing to say you’re going to restructure your packages and charge this this and this… but in reality often times that is not taking care of the problem. 

My clients think that just changing their pricing will make shifts happen. If you do not feel good about your own pricing or feel you are worthy enough to be charging that… then its not going to work. You will fight it and struggle with it. It won’t be congruent across the board. That is what I like to work on with people. If you do not feel good about yourself or you are not truly that worthy or valuable, then it doesn’t matter if you change every structure and cost of goods sold and time… it doesn’t matter.

Cost and Demand

Let’s dive into the actual meat and potatoes of stuff. Pricing is a formula. It is not just a guess. There is a strategy that goes into it. You have to carefully combine the cost and the demand. You have to weight he products that all clients want with your total cost. That is also known as the cost of goods sold. If you are a service based business then you are still factoring in your time. Right? That is still a major cost of everything. You have to make sure you are including that in what you are packaging up your services or products.

Time is absolutely what people underestimate the most when trying to price out services because they are just looking at what they want to make. They aren’t factoring in their time, they aren’t factoring in mileage, they aren’t factoring in your lens or camera body. So many things! At the end of the year they sit back and look “well that didn’t work”. And then they can’t figure out why.

Pricing is a very careful combination of cost and demand. Many creatives fail to factor in the time they spend in their work. YOU… I am looking at you. You are the most valuable cost of your product. And in order to feel filled and valued by your product you have to have an income. You have to pay yourself first. If you aren’t actually making something at the end of the day, there is no point. That is one thing so many people fail to do.

Another thing I want to point out is the only way you can change the price of your product is one of three different ways. You can’t just raise the pricing just because you feel like it. There is a strategy to this. You either have to change the expense of the product or service or you change the amount of time you are spending or you are changing how much you are paying yourself first. Those are the three different ways you can change the price of your service or product. Increasing the product price should eb based on those three things.

I see this happen a lot… you have to ignore your competitors pricing. You do not want to begin to compare or copy anyone else’s pricing. I would even go so far as to suggest, don’t even both at what they start at… guess what1? You don’t even know if they are making a profit. So why on earth would you want to look at that if you don’t know if they are making a profit to begin with? People can put on a really big façade and make it look like they are making money, but that doesn’t mean they are. That is one of the biggest mistakes I see time and time again. Creatives begin to collect pricing from all their competitors and they start to analyze it and make their own price list to be this better version of all of those packages they collected, but it is so much less important to be conscience of what your competitors are doing around you. Just use your efforts and time by doing your own thing. Just do you! That is another thing, you won’t feel worthy about charging triple times what you would’ve initially charged. It will never sit well. Your clients will pick up on that and pick up on the misalignment. If you do not feel you are worth $2,000… they will pick up on that and then they won’t book you. You will have this problem of “why isn’t anyone booking me?”. It all starts at the root. It all begins and ends with you.

Dig Deep

Another thing, I see so many people just say “well I don’t have any clients on the books, so I’ll take whatever I can get”. How many people have said that? Part of that is it is okay to say “no”. It is okay to say no because what that is doing you are honoring yourself and your worth. IN the long run it will save you from trying to rebuild your own sense of value. It will help you stay in this place of valuing yourself and feeling worthy of charging what you are. I promise you, if you give someone a discount or you barter with someone against what your better judgement is telling you… those people will end up being not your ideal client. They will be pain in the ass clients too.

Do not base whether or not you say yes to a client on “well they have a fabulous network”. “They will bring me in a whole lot of future clients”. I will be the first to tell you… very rarely do people that ask you for a discount for your services or products very rarely do their people flock to you because chances are if they are asking you for a discount, their people will too. If they are not part of your target market, chances are their friends are not either. So many people will say “its fine, I gave them $200 off, but they have such a good network…” They think they will make it back in the long run. No guys. That is awesome positive thinking, but what you are trying to do is back track and make the decision that you made based on your value okay. That is not okay. That is why so many people struggle with pricing because (AGAIN) you do not realize how much your pricing has permeated your business… how much your perceived value of yourself and worth of yourself has trickled within your business. And then you start to put band aids on other areas of your business.

Pricing is where it begins and ends. You got into business because you were fired up. You felt a passion, felt a calling… whatever it may be. It is a business at the end of the day. You have to make money form this. You aren’t doing this just for the sake of humanity. You need to still love what you do, you need to not feel burn out… and how do you do that? With being paid what you are worth.

Story Time

I’ll tell you a quick story. A couple months ago even though I have been doing this now since 2010, I forgot this lesson. My clients started to walk over me. I was busy all the time but I wasn’t making any money and I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing anymore. It was draining me. To be honest… doing things that weren’t my favorite or were coming from a place of passion for me… made me feel even more burned out. I have this need in myself to be a people pleasure. I would bend over backwards for everybody and anyone. Who ended up suffering because of that? Me, my family, my work, my soul. Everything began to suffer. Instead of being this badass entrepreneur, I took a step back and realized this isn’t how I want my business to look. I made the changes. This is the harsh reality of being an entrepreneur. We love what we do. We love people. We want to serve. However, if you aren’t serving yourself first, you aren’t going to be able to fill anybody else up from that cup., It is an uneven exchange. Then you begin to resent your business. When I sat down and nailed the formula for pricing my own work… I gained the clarity I needed to be able to say no to certain things. It is a process.

I am not cookie cutter. I am not your mainstream educator. I come at everything in life, in my business form a different angle than mainstream. I always have. I lead with my heart and my intuition and I am going to tell you the reality without sugar coating it. I don’t feel anyone out there teaches pricing quite like this. Here is the heart and soul of it.

Value Yourself

How many of you have said…

  1. “My clients are confused by pricing.”

  2. “I don’t know how I came up with my pricing.”

  3. “My pricing is heavily influenced by my competition.”

  4. “My sales averages are lower than my goal.”

  5. “I have products or services for people to see, but they are rarely sold.”

  6. “My clients don’t buy the packages or services I really want them to.”

  7. “I am nervous to discuss pricing with my clients.”

  8. “I feel under valued or under appreciated at times.”

This is a universal formula, however you have your own influencing factors. You have things that will weigh heavier within that formula than say someone else who has 17 children.

If you can relate to any of those quotes, know there is a problem with not only your pricing structure but also your self worth. This again, will be the 16th time I’ve said it… this is a much deeper rooted situation than you realize. This is the type of thing, again, I work with people on. Anybody can teach anyone pricing. You go on google and you can look up pricing formula for blah blah blah. What you won’t find is someone who will sit there and tell you why and how to really get to the root of that.

Psychology of Sales

If you give people too many options. If you hop on a website or a restaurant and there are way too many choices, what happens? Decision fatigue. People do not make a decision. You are not going anyone a favor by having sixteen different. You are doing more of a disservice to people. The reason why many professionals will have three packages is because the psychology behind it says people will choose the middle package 90% of the time. They will choose the middle. I’ll tell you why…

Say your toaster breaks and you need to buy a new one. Hop on amazon because prime is life and you start looking at things. You are looking at price and reviews. You don’t want a $5 Walmart toaster because chances are it might blow up and then you spend even more money fixing your house. But on the flip side, you know in your head you do not need a $500 toaster. Unless it is buttering that toaster for you and washing your windows at the same time… you do not need it. Why? You value other things in life. So where does that lead you? Somewhere in between. You may not have a specific number in your head of how much you want to spend, but you have a range. Anywhere from $25-$60. You know you have a range. You are going to go with something within that range. What is going to help determine that? Most of the time reviews. 

So again, your middle package is where most people will buy from you. They do not need to have all the bells and whistles (most of the time). But you also don’t want to just have bare bones minimum. Does that make sense to you?

If you want to be making X number of dollars on every single client, you make that the middle package. You make the package you want to be making the most sales with… the middle package. You want to show people there are other options, but the middle is where you want people to go. When you want to add additional packages, take away items from the bottom package and add it to the top. Your clients will gravitate towards the middle. The smallest package should be bare bones minimum. There is a psychology behind this.

People gravitate towards the middle because it implies a value and it is easy and convenient. People will also implicitly assume it is the most popular selection. It makes them feel comfortable to make that investment with you and knowing other people have made the same choice.

Factor in Costs

Here are some costs I want you to pay attention to. I’m not sitting here giving you the pricing formula you need to be using, because it looks a little different for every person. The structure looks the same. You need to factor in these costs to every job you take on. Are you accounting for your…

  • Phone

  • Cellphone

  • Rent

  • Electricity

  • Marketing

  • Education

  • Postage

  • Mileage

  • Insurance

  • Vehicle

  • Bank fees

  • Credit Card Fees

  • Computer

  • Camera

  • Lenses

  • Printers

  • SD Cards

  • Website

  • Subscriptions

Are you taking into account all for those things? Probably not. These are also costs you need to be accounting for. So when people come to you and say “you’re charging X for blah blah blah!?” Yes. This is my business. If you were going into a Target you can’t just expect everything to be displayed neatly on the shelves and not paying people to do it. That is part of it. You really have to be thinking about all of these things. Especially with planners or photographers or anyone who is just starting out… they are not factoring in that stuff because it begins as a side hustle and then two or three years into the business they aren’t making a profit and they wonder why. This is why!

What are you worth per hour? How long does it take for you to go from brand concept to finished product? Or editing photos? You have to think about these things. You are not just pulling a number out. It doesn’t matter what sounds good. You have to go through the motions.

I would suggest writing out all of the costs associated with your business. Write them all out. Then if it is a yearly fee, divide it by twelve. Then you have it as a monthly payment. From there you need to be figuring out how many clients it would take you to cover your costs. So in order for you to stay in business it will cost you $2,000, then okay you should probably have a bare bones package of $2,000 or something close to that. You need to be covering your expenses with only one or two or three clients. Anything above and beyond that (technically) is profit.

I would love to know if this is stuff you’ve put thought into. I also would like to know the answer to these questions…

  1. “My biggest hurdle with pricing right now is…”

  2. “My biggest hurdle with my current price list and my packages is…”

  3. “My clients have given the following feedback on my price list…”

Are you setting aside money for taxes? When you start to make a profit with your business you need to be paying in taxes. Are you setting aside at least 30%? Qapital. That is my solution. Any time a check goes into an account, it can automatically take out 30% for you. I have managed to actually save a ton of tax money without having to think about it because it happens before you even realize it.

Wrapping It Up

So guys… what this helpful? I hope this chat helped. My sole goal from this chat was to show you that you are worth it! If your pricing or strategy for figuring out your packages and services… if you want help that is absolutely something I can work with you one-on-one.

If you are going to rearrange your packaging and pricing, make sure you are factoring your time and all the expenses we talked about. Write down your expenses first. Make sure you getting your money.

Q: How do you suggest raising prices? All at once? Small steps?

A: You can change the expense of the product or service. You can change the time you are spending on the product. Or change how much you are paying yourself. You don’t always have to jack up the number, maybe you just need to take a look and see how much time you are spending or how much you are paying yourself. I would suggest doing it across the board. I would do it within incremental steps within that strategy. If you change $1,000 and you want to jump to $3,000… that won’t sit well with you. Maybe first do $1,500. Do it in stages. Make sure you are actually making something when everything is said and done.

Lauren Dragon-Cook: I’m so excited to be back! Yay yay yay! Happy Tuesday! Let’s get this show started. How are you all doing? How have we been doing since the retrograde? For those of you who don’t know right now is a shadow period. Right now things are a bit crazy still. Things are sort of leveling out here.

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK* Housekeeping!

Few housekeeping things first and foremost. I sent out an email to everybody yesterday and for those of you who haven’t’ seen or paid attention… guess what!?

1. We are now officially Creative Boss Life. YAY! A little bit behind that, I recently realized a couple months ago that what I do and what I teach and preach and what I want you to learn is applicable to people across all spectrums. All industry’s! We are no longer just Wedding Boss Life, we are now Creative Boss Life. So if you have friends maybe they are bloggers or content writers or video producers… then bring them on in! Now our community is expanding very rapidly. I saw a huge growth after making that change. So very excited about that.

2. We are going to be doing our Facebook Lives every other Tuesday. Back in action, I am back and it feels good to be back. I feel energized and excited to be here again. It will be every other Tuesday. We won’t have one next Tuesday. I will post a calendar though so you can have the dates and write them in your own books. All that fun stuff.

3. The winner of the giveaway! The winner of the contest is the other thing I want to share, but I will wait til the end on that. Last week I wanted you guys to have a chance to have a one on one coffee and clarity chat with me and get a full spread for your business so in order to do that you just needed to invite your friends and biz-besties in the group. It has been my goal to get 1,000 group members by the end of August and we are pretty close. So there is that.

The Burnout Bus

We are going to be tuning in and chatting today about riding on the Burnout Buss. You and I and everybody that has been in business for a little bit, we all know that burnout is real. It doesn’t matter what stage you are at in your business, burnout is inevitable. Burnout for everyone looks very different across the board. For some people that could mean needing to literally crawl into bed, pull over the covers and not come out for a week. For other people it means you are lacking your creative juices. It manifests itself in all kinds of different ways.

Today I am going to share with you some tips and tricks that have helped me ride the wave and sometimes I feel like I have a freakin’ assigned seat on the burnout bus and I’m not allowed to move, but I will share with you what helps to get me through until I’m energized and back at it.

First and foremost, I really want to drive this notion and idea home for you guys. We are not powered by solar energy. We are not energizer bunnies, we are not programed to always be on. We are not programmed to always be going 100%. We need to recharge. We have to! You have to! If you don’t, what happens? You die. Well figuratively. 

That is the biggest premise of what I am talking about today. You are not programmed to always be on at 1,000 miles an hour. Its not how we were born to be. It is not how our brains are wired. If you want me to dive into the psychology of it all, I can. Do you know that? That’s what my background is in. I kind of combine psychology in ways in which you don’t necessarily notice it. 

Before We Dive In

A couple of things that you really need to understand before I give you the tips and tricks. Picture ourselves as seasonal. You have periods of growth, you have periods of rest, you have periods of dormancy. Like winter, fall, spring summer. We have talked about that in a previous episode, embracing the cycles of your business. It applies to everything. Stress plus rest equals growth. Write that down.


If you are finding that you aren’t getting enough rest in general, if you aren’t sleeping well at night, if you are burning the candle at both ends… that isn’t helping you. As business owners I feel we have gotten into this myth that if you work really hard that is what is going to take you to the top. I have to pop your bubble. That is not what is going to bring your business o the top. I immediately felt like some of you went to think that rest is just sleep or being lazy. That isn’t further form the truth. Rest isn’t just sleep, its not just sitting around, and its not just being lazy. The reality of things is that stepping away form whatever it is you’re working on and being able to shift your focus… whether that is physically getting up and going for a walk or getting up and doing a chore you need to or going and picking up a book you are enjoying. Those are things that are going to help you shift your focus. It allows your brain and your body to take a little step back and to get away from always working so freakin’ har and always pushing yourself forward. Sometimes, maybe I’m alone on this, sometimes my biggest ah-ha moments and moments of clarity are when I’ve just stopped. I’ve just taken the time to listen and maybe I’m meditating or simply being present. Or maybe I’m just sitting outside, it doesn’t matter. But those are the moments where you are going to get your clarity. If you can take a step back and give yourself some time every couple of hours… take a vacation on a bigger level! Step away on the weekends. You shouldn’t be working 7 days a week. 

How many people are excited about Mondays? Please tell me. If you view Monday’s as a curse… tell me.

What it does by taking a break, stepping away… it allows our really difficult stressful burnt out periods to be more productive. Let me repeat that. When you take a break, when you take a vacation, when you are bale to shift your focus, when you are able to getaway on the weekends and put work aside and you aren’t always pushing forward… you are allowing those stressful periods to be more productive. 

For all of the people that are really excited about Mondays, that means you are doing a really good job of balancing the rest and the stress. Whenever or not your hate Mondays, that shows you if you are growing. If you are despising Mondays… that means you are probably just working yourself to the bone and you are not able to really accomplish those goals you’ve set for yourself. You are probably burning the candle at both ends. If you’re in the middle… that means you are trying to figure out a balance for yourself at this point. You would have to like Mondays 50% of the time and be excited about it, but are you excited about it when you aren’t burnt out? When does that excitement come up? Look at that for yourself. I can tell you when I am tired and exhausted that is when I do not want a Monday to come. That is a red flag for you to take an inventory and look within. If you are feeling pissed off that Monday is coming… that means you are probably burnt out in some area. Maybe you like your job but sometimes the weekend is your busies time. Well did you just have a super busy weekend? What does that look like for you?

Evidence suggests that burning the midnight oil too often leads to less productivity. Not more. If you do it once in a while, what I am talking about here… if you pull an all nighter, you have this huge project you need to get done and it is 2am and you are still going at it. If you begin to do that once a week or a couple times a week or three to four times a week, you are going to burn yourself out even more and you are not going to be more productive. What I am trying to say here… when you give yourself rest and when you give yourself grace and when you are just giving yourself permission to not be on 24/7, your productivity and growth is going to shoot through the roof. You are going to feel refreshed and feel like you just had a day at the spa. You will feel so much better about your work and life.

Staying productive while on the verge of burning out

What happens when you are just going at it? If you are incapable of performing executive functions, meaning unable to use your reasoning skills or problem solving skills… if you are unable to use those skills your working memory doesn’t function as well. Your ability to manage tasks goes way down. This is the psychology behind this. I was look at articles and studies. There is evidence and facts that backs this up. 

Recovering from Burn Out

How many people are burnt out? How many people are just waking up and are not grateful? How many people?

What happens, when you start to get that is it will continue to spiral until you put a wedge in that and recognize it. Don’t be afraid to say no. That is one thing I want you to write down. I am giving you permission. Do not be afraid to say no. What happens when you are burnt out… your ability to filter what you should be working on versus what needs to get done versus what is not a priority, you are in a tunnel vision on having to get it all done. Your ability to reason and say no to things also declines. Don’t be afraid to say no especially when you know you are on the verge of or in the present moment of being burnt out.

Something else to help you recover from being burnt out and feeling like this is providing yourself with a  way to decompress. I was talking with a client last week, and they were like “I don’t have any hobbies, I don’t really know what I enjoy doing anymore”. How many people feel that way? How many people don’t know what your hobbies are anymore because you are so consumed with growing your business? And that is not a bad thing. That just means you are really friggin passionate about doing what you are doing. But often times you get so engrossed in growth and making it work that you lose sight of what really also makes you happy for having a way to decompress. 

Whether that means going outside… get a hammock! I am not even kidding you… when I got my hammock last year I was like ehh… may not use this. I got it as a deal, end of the season. I use that thing so much I kind of am even impressed with myself. If I know I am about to explode on my children or husband or both… often times I know when I am at my breaking point. I will say “okay mommy is going in her hammock”. They know… don’t mess with her. Don’t talk to her. She will supervise as long as you guys are away. She will make sure you aren’t breaking anything but leave her alone. She needs time to read, to just sit, to be present and recharge. For me it sounds so silly, but my hammock is such a beautiful way for myself to decompress.

My work used to be my hobby too for the longest time. When I failed to realize that I didn’t have any hobbies that made me happy anymore, guess what? My business was just kind of coasting. It wasn’t growing. I don’t know if there is any correlation there, this was a few years ago. But when I really started to get hobbies and do things for me instead of feeling selfish about this, then that is when I also was able to start resting. Not being lazy, but resting. And that is when I started to see my business grow again. Take it for what it is.

A few other things I want to point out. Some major tips to help you recover.

  1. Recommit to relaxing. I am giving you permission. So many of us need to hear that because we feel, we live in a very egocentric society and it is very go go go me me me. Sometimes when you are flipping the switch you almost need to say “is this okay I am doing this?”. Recommit to relaxing. Every single person needs to step away from work every now and then. Even if you are a creative entrepreneur and you love your job. Make time in your schedule to relax. I’ll tell you. I know often times when I wake up, I know what my level of productivity is going to be. I can feel it. If I am burnt out I might as well not even bother, if I do try to accomplish big things, its not going to happen and I just wasted an entire day. So if you are waking up and feeling burnt out, why not take the time to relax. Do something for you.
  2. Make non-flexible monthly and quarterly goals. When you have goals written out for yourself, it doesn’t matter what date you get it done, as long as you get it done by the end of the month… that gives you a much wider range of time to get it done. You don’t feel you have to be at it every second. If you wake up and feel today is not the day, then give yourself that grace and try again tomorrow.
  3. Don’t get distracted. How many of us immediately upon waking up check social media? My hand is up for a reason. I am working on this myself. Just because I am giving these tips to you doesn’t mean I am immune to them. I have just taken stock and inventory of what helps and what doesn’t help. Try to do that. I have also noticed if I wake up in the morning and I’m in a fabulous mood and then I look at Facebook or Instagram and somebody is talking about the tragic murder that happened in Colorado recently… I actually was having a fabulous day, I was on it. I felt like I wasn’t burnt out, I read that and complete game changer. I remember I didn’t get anything else accomplished for that day just because I was so consumed. It was so overwhelming. If you are able to maybe hold off until lunch time, until you have your big tasks done for the day. Just putting down the technology down for the day. As a society, especially as creative entrepreneurs we are more plugged in now than we ever have been. It makes it really difficult to leave work at the office and actually unwind when we have the chance to do it. Turn off your phone or computer and enjoy the moment. If you have set office hours for yourself, you shouldn’t be working outside of those. Don’t try to add one more thing to your list. You are not following your own boundaries. If you aren’t following them, how can you expect a client to follow them? Be present. 
  4. Burn out can also really affect us physically. When I am burnt out I am exhausted. I get more migraines than normal and I don’t want to be around people. I can be really negative. With all of that, notice those signs. They are coming up for a reason. Give yourself plenty of rest. Get sleep. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water. I feel like absolute garbage if I don’t drink enough water in the day.
  5. Ask for help if you need it. I used to be the biggest nay sayer of this. No. I notice that when I actually ask for help, I feel so much more relieved immediately. The problem with that is you have to ask the right people. If you are asking a friend to help you with a project for your business and maybe they have never spent a day of their life working for themselves, they work for a corporation or something, they may not be the best fit for the project. You have to ask someone as dedicated as you are to help with the task. What does that look like? I needed help last night in trying to figure out how to speed up my website. My website all of the sudden is lagging super bad. I can’t figure out why, so I need help. What do I do? I am going to ask someone who knows what they are doing and in exchange pay them! Do I have the money to be spending on speeding up my website? It depends on how you want to answer that. Do I have the money? Yes. Do I want to be spending it on that? No! But do I think it is going to help my business? Yes. For me I would much rather give someone that money and have the stress be gone, than just continue to be stressed and have it permeate and trickle into every area of my life.

In Closing…

Just remember, please, to take a step back and give yourself some space and grace to evaluate the current situation. Be honest with yourself! Can you identify the sources of your stress? Internal or external? How can you reduce the anxiety it is causing you? How can you prevent feeling burnt out in the future? Taking steps to recover from burnt out and recognizing the signs and the symptoms can help you recover quicker in the future.

That is my biggest takeaway from all of this. I so easily overcommit to stuff. I know that. I give give give, because that is just who I am. But it is when I start giving too much of myself that I really become burnt out. That is why I had to take a couple weeks off from doing these. But now, here I am, I took a couple week hiatus and I feel awesome, I am stoked to be here. I think by doing it every other week it will help maintain that level of balance. I love doing them! I love doing these LIVES because it brings me so much joy, but when you start to feel it is more of an inconvenience or a must do versus something you love doing, that is when it is burn out.


It is a balancing game. That is it!

The 5 Crucial Ways You need to be balancing your time as an entrepreneur

Lauren Dragon-Cook: How are we doing on this beautiful Tuesday? It is almost August… I cannot believe that. That’s a little crazy.

Today we are going to be chatting about a couple different things. We are also going to be making some announcements and all kinds of fun stuff. You are going to want to stick around until the end! This is going to be a relatively short episode.

I know we are in the middle of the summer. I know that obviously we are all busy. We all have so much shit happening. If you are a mom… if you are working part time on your passion and full time on a “real business”, then you know summertime is busy as hell! So I don’t want to take up too much of your time today. I just want to give you a couple of strategies that I use for myself to help balance out the chaos.

Funny story about that… I actually was using them yesterday and I didn’t even realize it. Yesterday (very quickly) I am working on SEO for a very good friend/client of mine and her website literally went down for half the day. Hen on top of that I was working with another client and getting their replay out for a video that they had purchased and that wasn’t working. My husband was being super needy and all the things! It was your stereotypical shit-show of a Monday. So I was like “oh my god I just want to start drinking right now, its like 9am in the morning”. And I didn’t for two reasons, 1) that would be a little irresponsible and 2) I was out of wine. It’s a little bit of both there.

I was using some of these five tips I will be sharing today. Hopefully you can apply them to your everyday and try to balance out your business with life in general.

Five Tips and Strategies

First things first… these are five strategies to help balance out your business life and your personal life, because even though they are very integrated and very much one in the same, you have to keep them at arms length at certain times, otherwise you will go bat-shit crazy. Your business will infiltrate your family time or you personal stuff that you have going on be inhibiting your business hours and what not. So I want to teach you five tips that hopefully will be super helpful for you.

1. You need to start being more consistent with your actions.

You hear consistency is key from leaders and podcasts and hear it everywhere! Great, but what the hell does that mean? What I like to think of when I think of consistency… try to set some sort of routine for yourself. Your routine can be different every single day, but try to at least have all Mondays you do this and on all Tuesdays you do this. That way you know what to expect and you know what it coming down the pipeline. That way you are able to kind of easily dodge bullets if they are coming your way. Just being consistent with your actions also goes for if you tell one client that your office hours are until 4pm on Wednesdays but then in the same breath you tell another client that your office hours are until 9pm on Wednesdays, that’s not consistent! And then you have no idea who you told what to! Its just about consistency. If you say one thing and set one boundary for yourself… stick to it! 

Now here is the flip side to it. If you find it is not working, you do not have to hold onto that shit. This is not family member that we have to keep in our lives from day to day… no no no. You get rid of it. You throw it out. Try something new. You have to find what works for you and your schedule.

2. I guarantee you, if you are struggling with trying to balance this (all of it) and you’re a woman I promise you, you are not taking proper care of yourself.

So if you are not doing this, you cannot give to anybody else. Think of yourself as a bucket. There is a hole at the bottom of your bucket. It is always open. That means people are always taking from you. What happens if you have have a faucet up top, what is going to happen eventually? Your bucket will run dry. You won’t have anything else to give. Think of it as a cycle. You have to give to you in order for you to give to everybody else. We all can feel really guilty if we take time for us. If we go to get a massage or a mani pedi or just go for 10 minutes and take a walk. You have to take time for you. If you can feel yourself starting to burn out, take the time. Don’t feel guilty. I am giving you permission to not feel guilty about that.

3. I can almost without a shadow of a doubt say that if you are struggling with balancing it all, you yourself don’t know what balance truly means to you.

You have to figure out what that means. You have to figure out what your weekly schedule is going to look like regularly. How much will you allow on your plate /How may appointments will you allow? I will be the first to tell you, I’m guilty of this. If you feel like you are overwhelmed and there is too much on your plate, I am giving you permission to get rid of the crap you can. Reschedule them. If you have too many appointments  or too many kids activities or too many baseball games you have to go to or whatever… reschedule it. You can’t give 100% of yourself if your wick or flame is about to burn out. You can’t do it. I don’t know what this is the way it is, but in our society especially as women we are supposed to be fucking superheroes! You can’t be super woman! You can only do so much and do not beat yourself up if you recognize that. 

In all actuality if you can see that you maybe have overbooked yourself, that is a strength! That is not a weakness. You shouldn’t look at it as “I do too much”. No don’t beat yourself up about it. Don’t do that. Do the opposite. Recognize… “I really thought I could do more, I’m just not feeling it this week. I need to reschedule”. That is it! I’m giving you permission.

4. This is a big one! I think that as entrepreneurs we are always on.

We are always on. We are just like a train. Always chugging along. We are picking up other stuff as we go and we are trying to manage it all. But here is the thing… when you are spending time with your family… spend time with your family! If you are working, the you need to be working. You can’t try to multi-task like a mo-fo and expect to give it 100%. Yes we can do that, and we can do it well. Especially as female entrepreneurs. Am I right? We know how to do that. But it will burn you out without you recognizing it. If you say to yourself “okay my work hours are done at 5pm every day”, put that computer away. Put the phone away. You close it up and put it away for tomorrow. Nobody will die if you don’t het back to them with an email. No one will give you this terrible review if you don’t get back to them that same day. If yourself some grace. When you are present with your friends and family, be present. Don’t be checking emails. If you are working, give it your all! Don’t be answering the phone calls from your husband or wife. You are working. Just because you may not have an office in an office building doesn’t mean I’m not working.

5. How many of us tend to procrastinate?

How many of us tend to really… you know you have to get something super important done but at the same time you also know you can get X, Y, Z done… I’m guilty! You think if you are getting more done, then you are getting more accomplished. Right? Logic. Well I don’t know about you, but for me personally anytime I ever do that, I always notice that that one big project that I have going on, then gets pushed another day. I keep doing that. I can keep doing all the little things, but that big project just keeps getting pushed out further and further. So what I would recommend (and I have been trying to do this more lately) get that big project done first. Because then, I find that my brain is free. I’m not taking up space “ugh I still have to do this…”. There is space to get that done. Your brain isn’t occupied by clutter anymore. Try doing that one big project first. 

If I were to go onto my Wunderlist, and look at all of my tasks. I have BIG stuff on there from back in February. But that’s what happens if I put those big projects aside. There is some saying “eating your frog first thing in the morning”. The idea behind that is you’re knowing out the biggest thing first, you are getting it out of the way so that for the rest of your day if you have anything left you are wide open and free so you can actually be creative.

There are five quick, but super beneficial tips. Nothing ground shaking monumental.

Lauren Dragon-Cook: How the heck are you!? Good morning to you all. Let’s get started. Let’s jump in.

Today we are talking about automation and workflows and how it is going to make your life a whole heck of a lot easier if you know how to implement automations into your business. Nobody wants to be strapped to their phone 24/7 or trying to remember to send our questionnaires for timelines. All of those things. I am going to do a basic automation 101 today.

We are going to be chit-chatting about workflows and systems so you might be thinking, “Well, Lauren said we were going to be talking about automation today.”

Well that is kind of what a workflow is. A workflow can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For me it is an automated set of tasks and to-dos that happen without me even having to worry about it or think about it. It can be all rolled into one.

We are going to chat a bit about how to actually map out your client process, how to create templates for yourself, and the heart and soul.. .how to automate all of this stuff. No one wants to worry about whether or not they sent out a thank you or how many people actually remember to ask for a review once the job is over? I know I wouldn’t. There is just too much stuff going on in life. Systems are all the guidelines and processes, everything you do with a client from start to finish. It can start as soon as someone inquires, sends you an inquiry form to you and all the way through til the end of a job. What does this look like for you? What are the steps you take?

Let’s dive in!

No Systems in Place?

What does it look like if you don’t have systems in place? What does it look like if you are just trying to do everything all at once and not remembering anything at all? You are going to be starting from scratch with every new client. You will be doing so much extra work for yourself and so much more time than is needed. Lets say a potential client contacts you. Then the email sits in your inbox until you remember to reply to it. You write an email from scratch lettings them know the first steps in working with you. And then you write another email after that because you completely forget a detail you were supposed to send to them.

Does that sound familiar to anybody?

That is how chaotic it can look when you aren’t using a system or automation.

With Systems in Place!

When you are using automation and workflows within your business a potential client contacts you, you have an automated email response with everything they need to know that get sent out within 15 seconds after they’ve inquired. You don’t forget anything important. They can easily set up a consult call with you and on the consultation you have a set of questions you can go over and things to talk about because you have it all ready to go for yourself.

Doesn’t it sound so much better?

Why Systems?

Why would you want systems? Why would you want automation? Why would you want workflows? Well you are setting the foundation for each new client. Again, you are not starting from scratch. You have the same process. You make sure nothing gets left out. You are keeping things consistent. That way maybe you forgot to send someone an email requesting a review, but then you asked another person who maybe wasn’t your favorite client anyway. Delegating gets a whole hell of a lot easier. This way you know what sets of tasks can’t be automated when you are working with a client. You know what you have to do yourself.

And you look like a Rockstar! You look like a professional badass. All of these things are being triggered for you, but to the client you look like you are on top of your game and you have it all worked out and you know what you are talking about. They are thrilled that they hired you.

Mapping It Out

What I tell all of my one-on-one clients when they are working with me to try to figure out their workflow in particular and what they can automate themselves… you need to take out a pen and paper. I don’t even care if you are completely digital. There is something to having to write it out that is triggering every task in your brain and in your memory what you should be doing.

I would suggest go back to your very last client. Try to remember every single step that happened as you were working with them. When someone inquires with you they are essentially asking one of two things: 1) are you available on my date or 2) what is your pricing? Maybe you don’t list your pricing online. Those are the two main questions that everybody asks. Everyone wants to know, unless they for some reason are able to see your calendar and see you are open on their date.

What you can do is generate an email that says something like this…

Thank you for reaching out to us. I am thrilled to talk with you more about your big day and answer any questions you might have. I know this isn’t a personalized email but you can expect one within the next 24 hours. If you haven’t had a chance to see our pricing you can do so here…”

Automation is Everything as a small business owner

Maybe you link to a PDF or show a hidden link to your website that has your pricing information on it. If that is something you wanted to do you want to make sure google isn’t able to crawl at or index that. If they do that and have this hidden page with all your package information if someone were to type in “LDC price” that page will show up. Just make sure that page isn’t being indexed by google.

You can link to many things in this email. That way you are doing two things. You are not only buying yourself time in order to respond to them but you also are going to look like you are a Rockstar professional because they are receiving something immediately. Maybe every other person they inquired with it took them 2 days to get back to them. But here you are... even if it is an automated response because it has your voice in it. It doesn’t have to be this robotic thing.

That is the start of thinking how your workflow works. I’ve given you an example workflow to help jog your memory. If you are a wedding planner, portrait photographer, or a wedding photographer you can actually download completely free workflow over on my blog. If you search at the bottom for wedding planner workflow… that post will pop up and that is where you can download the PDF that maps out different tasks and what not. For the wedding photographer, I think there are 55 steps. And the wedding planner something like 44. Definitely worth looking into.

Sample Workflow

So here is your workflow:

  • Client inquires
    • Respond to email with informational PDF
  • Arrange phone date
    • Where you cover pricing and the process of working with you

Do you want to call someone? Or do you not want to? For me, I’ve found my biggest success is when I did hop on the phone with people. They could actually hear me and your voice is going to signal a bunch of different emotions than an email would.

If they then say to you, “yes I want to hire you”, great! But what do you do then? That is a major step for so many people because now it is real. Now they have to know what they are doing or at least seem like they know what they are doing.

  • Send contract/invoice
    • Follow up with thank you card

Make sure to send them a thank you card or a welcome package. Having an automated email go out when someone does pay the deposit. That way you can say 

“thank you so much for making my deposit. I look forward to working with you guys.”

  • Add client to CMS (client management system)

If you don’t have software like Dubsado or Honeybook or 17 Hats, that is fine! However, what I will say to that is you are doing more work than what is necessary. You are doing so much more of the tedious crap that literally if you had a program you wouldn’t even have to give it a second thought. Make sure all their information is added. Another suggestion I have is add those clients to your address book. How often do you see you know where the venue is but you don’t have time the day of the wedding to look at the address or where the venue is… it is easy! You have it handy.

I also in my phone I have a different label for the fiancé’s name. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten the fiancé’s name. But now when I enter in the contact information I put that name in there. That way I can reference it easily.

  • Establish to-do list
    • And other necessary documents

What are things and particular times you want to make sure you are doing? Any other documents you need to have should go out!

  • Planning
    • All the elements you walk a couple through

Do you send them a checklist? What do you send them that they need? Just something to think about as well.


Please create templates for yourself. And for the love of God, if you haven’t already created email responses, if you haven’t already created client forms for yourself, if you haven’t’ already created stuff like that… do yourself the favor… hop on over to the shop and just get them. Buy them for yourself. The 65 email templates, canned responses, client forms, timeline questionnaires, blogging questionnaires… if it is not your strength don’t force yourself to try to create something like that right? I wish I had those forms in the beginning. Once you have your workflow down you need to actually start putting in the actual PDFS and forms.

What templates do you need? A lot of people get really distracted by the word “templates”. Let me break this down really quickly for you. A template is something you create with the intention of sending to your client and instead of needing to recreate that same document over and over again, you save it once and use it from then on out. That is it! I have so many people call me “what is a template? What do you mean?” This is what I mean!

  • Contracts
  • Invoices
  • Questionnaires
  • Proposals
  • Packages
  • Emails
  • Forms

Just a couple of the different things that are in the shop.

Let’s Get to Automation

This is where the magic truly lies. I didn’t want to just dive into this part especially without giving you a little context if automation is completely new to you. It saves you so much freakin’ time! Time you know, time is worth its weight in gold. It is more valuable to me than money. I don’t care who you are, I would much rather have an hour for myself or an hour sitting at the computer responding to emails that could’ve taken me 5 minutes if I had just pulled up my templates. Right?

You’ve got resources such as Dubsado, Honeybook, 17 Hats… and aiseplanner.

Aisleplanner… is fabulous but it is not an automation client management tool. Yes, it helps you to be a Rockstar and if you have a particular client that maybe you would rather chew your foot off than have to talk to all the time (we’ve all had them), it allows you to take a backseat. It provides your checklist and budget and the area where people can enter in their guestlist and seating chart. The list goes on. However, when I actually started with Dubsado, Aisleplanner had yet to come up with an invoicing tool. It just didn’t exist. No contracts or forms within aisleplanner. So I joined Dubsado and it was the perfect marriage of two worlds. You need something where you can actually track the other to-dos… sending out things in a specific set of times, your invoices, all of those things… your book keeping! It is super helpful to have.

Aisleplanner, again, I’ll be writing a blog post all about the differences between Aisleplanner and Dubsado. I get this question once or twice every few days. Be on the look out for that blog post.

Wrapping it Up

That is just the basics on what automation can do for you and your business. One quick tip I have for you guys, especially those of you who are super new… if you use Apple Mail or Gmail (maybe outlook too), instead of having a signature like “Lauren Dragon Cook with email and website”, put every single canned email response as a signature. Create a new signature for every single response and name it. You can name it wedding inquiry. So next time someone inquires, all you have to do is go to your signatures, find wedding inquiry, and boom! There it is. You’ve saved yourself like 5 minutes!

What area in your business sucks up most of your time? What area are you asking for a robot to do? Can it be done automatically? Do I have to do this for the rest of my life?

Q: Instagram posts are so draining!

A: Oh yes girl! There are so many resources out there to help though. What I like to do… I have a folder in my Google Drive (you can do this in Dropbox or any cloud storage) and you want to create a folder you just dump photos into that you know someday you want to use. So for my stock photos that are on point for my brand, in this folder. Photos I did from a wedding, when the photographer sends you the gallery… pick your favorites! Don’t download them all and have it take up all that space. Then what you can do is easily access those photos. One other tip I have when it comes to Instagram. Your photos don’t have anything to do with your caption. Nothing! It can be a picture of a coffee cup and you can be talking about weddings you had last weekend. It doesn’t have to be all about the same thing! That is one hang up I find a lot of my clients have. They feel they have to be talking about whatever they are showing. You just want to be focusing on resonating with your ideal clients. You want to be focusing on what problems they have and are you able to answer them.

Q: I am so tired of answering messages from Facebook.

A: That is absolutely where “ManyChat” would be a fabulous alternative for you. One of two things you can do… I did do a video awhile back and it talks all about “ManyChat”. I walk you through how to set it up and what to say. So if you go to my website you’ll find it. All you need to say to people that are inquiring on your page and its getting real old… and then you have emails and texts and Facebook… no no no. Keep that shit all in one place. Otherwise you are going to drive yourself crazy. I know I did. What you want to do in an automated message that goes out to any person who messages on Facebook:

“Thank you so much for writing to us. Our Facebook messages are a hot mess and we rarely check them. (Be Honest) the best way to reach us and get in touch is through email. You can email us your question here…”

You are saying to these people I take my business seriously and I want to keep track of your message so do it here. But you are also saving yourself the headache of trying to manage all these different things. If you don’t want to us “ManyChat” (it is a free service until a certain number of stuff), you can create a shortcut in your phone. So in settings on your phone you can go to “general” and then to “keyboard”. You want to click on “text replacement” and push the plus sign to add a new one and then type out whatever it is you want to say. And then in the shortcut option all you want to do is type in something that will trigger your memory. So like “fff”. Anytime you type “fff” that message pops up. So that way you don’t have to ever worry about actually typing the whole damn thing out again.

I use this trick a lot on my computer with Alfred. I don’t know about you guys btu I use a lot of emojis and for me I do most of my writing on my iMac in my office. So I don’t know about you but having to go into my keyboard every single time and find the emoji I wanted to use… got old real quick. With Alfred you just need to type in the word “snip” and you can say heart or unicorn and the emoji will pop up. It is a beautiful thing!

Or if you have URLs you write ALL THE TIME. Or your email address, you feel you are writing it every other sentence… in Alfred all you need to do is “option and space” and he pops up and you can start to type in “!wbl” and for whatever I had it set to it would pre-fill. So you could do URLs or your email or package information.

Q: It is important to track client payments and notice when they are received. We are still on mailed checks.

A: If you don’t use an automated system, I would suggest having one folder on your desktop and that is where you have your contract template, where you have your proposal template… where you keep all of your canned emails. And then I would create a spreadsheet. If you are using a payment processor, like Wave or Stripe or Square, you can use Zapier on your end to connect the two. If you are using a payment process in Zapier you can connect to that payment processor to a particular Google sheet so anytime a payment is made it is the middle man and will push the payment to the Google sheet. That way you have a record of what the heck is going on. It automatically gets updated. That way you can easily see who is doing what and where people are at.

If you are new to using a payment processor… they all charge a 2.9% transaction fee. I would highly encourage you to incorporate that into your pricing. At the end of the day it might add up to $50 or $100 over the life of working with a client, but bill that into your package. Don’t create that as a separate line. Don’t say “credit card processing fee”. Do not do that. I see so many people do that and no… you don’t need to say that to them. 

Q: Any way to send canned email automated replies for the 100’s of random client emails?

A: You could do a couple of different things. You could go through those emails and see if there is a common denominator or a universal word that shows up in all of them. If you find a keyword you can set something so it triggers that word. That might be kind of difficult to do. What I would do (as crappy as it is) is unless you have a chat bot redirecting people to a different place, I would have something where you have a word shortcut on your keyboard. Maybe make that the very first thing on your client packet like “I love questions but feel free to send all of your questions here”. Or set up a different email entirely and pool them all into one place.

She is a badass when it comes to marketing and systems and all of the fun stuff I love so much. I am so excited she is here. Today she will be chatting with us about how to clone your ideal client and make that whole process a little bit easier on yourself. 

Heidi has been in the industry for over a decade now. She has been marketing and doing her jam for awhile. She knows her shit, guys. So without further ado I am going to let her take the stage. So welcome! Welcome to the chaos.

Heidi Thompson: Hey! Thank you so much for having me. I am so excited to be here. I even got up early for it!

Lauren: I know you’re freakin’ west coast, its like 3am over there. I don’t even know what time it is.

Heidi: Neither do I. So today I want to talk to you about not JUST your ideal client, but how to clone your best clients. You get to choose who you work with and I think this is something a lot of people forget. But the way you market, determines who you attract and determines how likely it is that you are going to be able to command a higher price and close them at those prices.

I would be curious to know if you know who your ideal client is? This is the bedrock of everything. When people ask me questions, “Should I do this? Should I advertise here? Should I do that?”, its like okay… we need to figure out who you are talking to. It depends… if your people don’t use wedding wire to find their wedding vendors, then no it is not worth you spending money even if that works for someone else.

Ideal Clients as Human Beings

I think the really important thing is to know your ideal clients as human beings. This is a common mistake people make. They box them into these weird demographics. So I work with people between the ages of 25 and 45 who live within 50 miles of my zipcode and are getting married. Okay. Are they a Walmart shopper for their groceries or are they a Whole Foods shopper? That tells you something about a person and what is important to them and where their priorities lie. That is important because our values shape our purchasing decisions.

A lot of people get hung up on “this person doesn’t value what I do”. Okay cool, not your person. There is so much freedom in that. Saying I don’t need to work with that person. Yes it takes some balls to trust that another person will come along, but knowing who you are trying to attract , what they value is going to help you attract more of them and become the go-to person for them.

Lauren: So someone we have who commented in the live says their ideal client is…

  • Type A personality
  • Busy professional
  • Highly educated
  • 25-32 year olds
  • Edgy
  • Don’t want cookie cutter weddings
  • Think outside of the box
  • Like to break the rules

Heidi: So I love that she included this last part, because where a lot of people stop is busy, educated, and an age range. But that doesn’t tell you HOW to market to that person. That doesn’t tell you what to make your messaging to help you stand out. As an example, I have a wedding planner that I’ve worked with for awhile. She initially was marketing herself based on “your busy, I’m going to save you time, this will be awesome” … the typical kind of messaging you get around a wedding planner. She went through the process that I teach both in my book and programs and she interviewed her best clients and asked them all sorts of questions what made them decide to work with her and what options they looked at and cared about. It turned out the business was a factor, but it was priority number three or four. What the true driving force was that the people she was attracting has large families. They had been to their brothers, sisters, four of their cousins weddings and all the same. It drove them nuts. They don’t want the same experience for their guests. They want something different but want to incorporate their traditional traditions. The way you market that is not “you’re too busy”.

So what you start saying is “I can help you have a wedding that isn’t like your cousins and your brothers, but maintains those traditions”. You become a category of one. There are all those other planners and then there is you.

Another commenter says their ideal client is:

  • The mother
  • Not to be responsible for details
  • Enjoy the event

This is good. This is interesting that you know that. A lot of people would just assume. But if a lot of those responsibilities are falling on the mother of the bride, then it makes absolute sense to market to the moms. 

Lauren: One thing that I want to make note of is that I am seeing a very common similarity here. Obviously yes you want to know the level of education, the age range, the sex… those types of things that are measurable you can go into the behind the scenes of your google, of analytics and see those exact figures. Instead of you guessing the age range or thinking your ideal client is a male and then hop on the behind the scenes and see 94% of your website traffic is female, then you have to change that a little bit.

One thing Heidi is really driving home for you guys is the finer details, the mom that doesn’t want to be bothered with the pesky details, the people that are thinking outside of the box and like to break the rules. Those components are what is going to set you apart from the competition. 

Someone else just commented and said they are still trying to figure out their ideal client, but she has learned that she is not her own ideal client. That is so true. Just because you are creating this image of what this person looks like for you… that doesn’t mean that you have to fit into  that same category. You can still work with hose people and treat them like gold and give them the best service you can, but it doesn’t make you would pay for your own services. Right?

Figure out what is going to set you apart. Yes you need to know the core details, but really…

  • Do they like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts? 
  • Do they shop at Walmart or Whole Food? 
  • Do they rent an apartment? Do they own a home? 
  • Do they enjoy traveling or are they a homebody that loves to entertain? 

What do your people like to do?

Heidi: I like to ask people too, to encourage that sort of thinking… what do they geek out on? Everybody has their favorite things. Everybody has their stuff they are into. If you can appeal to someone on that human level, that really sets you apart. 

My friend Marie is an officiant. She is a total self-professed nerd. She talks about Game of Thrones on her website and she attracts people who are like “YES YOU ARE MY PEOPLE”. At the end of the day you work with people you like and trust. And we tend to as humans to like and trust people who have things in common with us.

Figuring out that you are not your ideal client is a BIG STEP. Very big step, because that is a level of maturity in your business of realizing you don’t have all the answers and you need to go to your people and listen to them. This is what I am such a proponent of is your people are such a wealth of knowledge. The book that I wrote about this is how they will tell you how to market to them. All you have to do is ask them the right questions and piece it together and work backwards, but you can’t do that if you assume you already have all the answers. 

“But I don’t have any clients…”

Lauren: Two questions. One, what do you do if you are just starting out in the business and you don’t have any clients to ask? But two, what are the types of questions that you would ask these people?

Heidi: So what do you do if you are just starting out? First, be open to working with people, but I really think it is better to make a hypothesis and test it, than to just wait and see. It is very had to attract anyone if you are being very vague in general. I would make an educated guess of who you think you want to work with. You can change this later. And even if you are further in business, there might come a point 5 years down the road where you determine you love one subset of people you work with and you want to work with just them, so you change things up to work with just them. This is constantly evolving and forming. So don’t feel you get locked in. You are the boss, you get to do what you want! Which is both great and terrifying.

I would encourage you if you are new, to make an educated guess. Take a stab and hypothesis of who you think you want to work with. If you know anyone like that kind of person, talk to them! Ask them these questions and figure out what matters to them. If you don’t know anyone like that, you want to make sure this person does exists. Look at people who are running businesses in other markets. Is there anyone that is targeting this person? How are they talking to them? How are they marketing? What tone are they using? What platforms are they using? You never want to assume people have done their homework, but is can be a clue. It is a good indicator of a direction you could go for. Anytime you can observe this group of people in person, online, in groups… it helps to get that kind of intel about them, But it is okay to start with a guess and develop it from there.

Think about who you want to be the go-to person for. There was another coordinator I worked with who wanted to be the go-to person for couples where at least one of them was of Mexican or central American heritage, first generation in the US. They were an American kid growing up, but their values and traditions are still really important to them. Maybe grandma and grandpa don’t speak the best English, so having Spanish is important. She built her entire business around these people. She decided she wanted to be the go-to person for Mexican American couples who really wanted to incorporate their traditions but do their own thing. Have a modern spin, but have someone who understood where they were coming from. 

So you are going to attract your ideal client, but it is like a bullseye. You are also going to attract the outside rings. You are going to attract white girls like me, who wish they were Mexican.

Maybe you don’t know a ton about your ideal client yet, but its part of an investigation that goes deeper and deeper and deeper.

Surveys and Questions

Lauren: Yes, and I love when you mentioned the bullseye. That is such a fabulous visual. Yes, you are niching it down to the point, but you are still going to attract a larger population. So many people get so distracted by this idea that they won’t be able to reach enough people, but you are going to have the subset that falls in there. They may not be your “ideal ideal client”, but they are still in the realm. They are still in that gray zone. They are not in the abyss. They have a lot of the same qualities and characteristics.

One thing I would like to mention is right before I launched Wedding Boss and I was very close to expanding LDC, I conducted a survey. I’m a nerd. I love statistics. I love it! I’m a psych nerd. I want to know the human behavior and what they think.

This is something I would encourage you to do if you are on the fence, I would encourage you to conduct a survey. Use Survey Monkey, Type Two, WooFoo… create a really simple survey. Email all of your past “best” couples. The ones you loved working with! Say “Hey I wanted to see how you are all doing. I am running a quick giveaway/contest. If you decide you want to answer a wicked short survey, I will enter you in for an Amazon giftcard.” It doesn’t have to be huge, but think about that… you spend $25, $50 on a giftcard somewhere and you are going to get all the information you could possibly need. That is then how you clone your ideal client. Think of it as an investment. 

So Heidi, what are some questions you could put into a survey or ask Facebook groups of brides? What could they ask?

Heidi: So for previous clients I always like to ask:

  • Where did you look?
  • How did you look?
  • Where did you conduct your research?

If you find out they all rely on a couple of blogs or they ask for recommendations form other vendors, that tells you where to double down on your marketing. That tells you where to pay more attention. Not all marketing techniques are created equal. It depends on what you people are involved in and what they respond to. You want to ask questions along those lines.

You then want to get into their thinking.

  • Why did you book me instead of someone else?

The line of questioning I really like to take here is just being super curious. Like a three year old. Why? Over and over and over again. I like to do this as having conversations with people, because we edit ourselves a lot when we type. So asking questions on an initial survey and then calling someone to follow up and elaborate.

So in the instance of the planner I was just talking about… why does it matter that your wedding is different? This brings you to the main point, you get to the core reason.

So you want it to be different because you want your guests to have a different experience. You don’t want them to be bored like you have been at previous weddings. Maybe you want to one-up your sister. Who knows! 

Lauren: I love that, yes!

Heidi: But that is the kind of thing you could include in your marketing technique. 

“If you want to have the best wedding your family talks about… choose me”.

It is really hard to market to someone when you don’t know what is going through their head. That is why I really want you to make a hypothesis, because when you don’t make people feel anything… apathy is the worst thing someone can feel about your brand. I would rather someone hate me than feel nothing. That means I am not being specific enough about who I am for. On the flipside… who I am not for. Something to think about.

You don’t want to just be mean, but you definitely want to say “this package, my services… I work with couples who x, y, z.” If someone is reading that and they don’t fit that mold, they aren’t for you.

You want to get to know the social components of who these people are and what makes them tick. So if you and your best client went you for drinks, what would you talk about? You want to appeal to that. That is why my favorite question to ask is “what do you geek out on?” You want to be able to incorporate that. Yes the decisions around purchasing are super important… you want to know how you are coming across because a lot of time you will learn things about yourself that you didn’t realize were your superpower of how people perceive about you. But you also need to know how to talk to these people as people in your marketing and stand out in such a way that when someone lands on your site, they feel something. They feel they are in the right place for them. 

Lauren: They feel they are home.

Heidi: Yes.

Be True to You

The Art of Cloning Your Ideal Client

Lauren: I love that. It is so important to be true to you. Just like you guys, we all can sense BS. Our clients can do the same. So if you are trying to attract a certain type of client and yet it doesn’t resonate with who you are... why!? You can’t jive with that. It will be like vinegar and water. Be true to you. You have heard me say this again and again. When I finally incorporated the woo woo back in March… shit changed, guys. It was making it rain. The heavens opened up, rainbows and unicorns started falling. Yeah I was doing alright. I was doing okay. But once you really integrate with who you truly are, that is when the magic happens. Something to think about.

Heidi: Yeah and you make a good point. You don’t have to BE your ideal client, but you have to LIKE your ideal client. It is someone you want to be around, regardless of the fact you are not that person. You still like them and like working with them. Maybe they aren’t your best friend, but you still really enjoy being with them.

What often gets lost so much in business is you get to design the business and the life you want. It is very easy to go in the direction of “oh I have to do this and work with these people and now I’m miserable and I hate my life”. But that is all up to you. You decide who you attract with how you talk about what you do with your marketing.

As a business you are solving a problem. Sure we are not curing cancer here, but we are still solving a problem that someone has. Things that they are worried about are things you can really call out and tease out in your website and the types of things you post on your social media. It needs to be specific to the problem that they want you to solve. If it is a problem you assume they have, that won’t lineup. They won’t feel as strongly as “yes this is exactly what is going on through my head right now, how did you know?”. Well I know because I’ve worked with people just like you and I used their words in my marketing.

Language, Language, Language

That is another key piece is when you get answers to questions from people, don’t edit them. As much as you possibly can, use their exact worse. The cursive knowledge will force you to talk about what you do in a way that someone who has never done it, doesn’t get.

Lauren: Yes and that is something so many people forget. We use terminology that we all know, we all speak, but it is not their love language. Those are not the words that they would us. Do you have a good example?

Heidi: For me I was trying to boil down a quick one line of what I do. I put it to my group and asked which of these resonates most with you?

  1. I help wedding professionals make more money without going crazy in the process.
  2. I help wedding professionals grow their businesses without going crazy in the process.

People hated the making money one, which I was like “alright…”. Then I used the one that my group most identified with. It is the same thing, but it is a different way of saying it. If I had said it the other way I would have driven people away who could’ve been my ideal clients purely because I didn’t understand what it was that they wanted. What problem they wanted solved.

Lauren: Absolutely. I love that. It made me think… if you have a Facebook page or a group, create a poll and ask them certain questions. What was one added bonus of working with me that you didn’t anticipated?

Heidi: What do you wish you knew before you went through the wedding planning process? That gives you all these ideas of how you can market to people. You can turn that into blog posts or social media posts to address these issues that came up for people that they didn’t know they were going to have.

Lauren: I love this. This combined with SEO… I feel like I’m beating a dead horse but these strategies combined with SEO is all the advertising you would need in the world.

Heidi: It is all in your ideal client’s head. It is who they are and how they think. There are photographers who really focus on working with tattooed couples, who don’t want to hide their tattoos and show them off. If I was covered in tattoos, that is who I would want to work with. I want to work with someone who knows how to show that off even if they cost more. Now it is not “this photographer or that photographer”… it is “this photographer who absolutely gets me and all of these other photographers”. 

Lauren: Yes and they are willing to spend the money if that means they are going to get exactly what they want.

“I have to do…”

Heidi, one of the last questions I want to ask is what is one of the biggest takeaways or biggest hidden secrets that you tell only your paid clients? One is one of the biggest monumental shifts?

Heidi: I think something that comes up a lot is what you “have to do”. The overwhelm that comes along with that. You get to design the business that you want. You get to design the business around the ideal clients that you want to have. You don’t have to do all the things. In fact, during our workshops in the wedding collective that we have, one of my favorite questions to ask people is “what are you going to stop doing?’

Lauren: PREACH! YES!

Heidi: Because you can just pile on and pile on, but what is not working? Get rid of it. You don’t have to do it. Just do what works.

It can be simpler than it feels like it should be. I really like to encourage people to focus on just a few marketing channels as part of their marketing plan. You can’t focus on ten things, that is against the definition of the word focus. Its not going to happen.

Lauren: Where are you when I need you? One thing! One!

Heidi: Maybe there are two or three things that work well for you… good keep going! Not to say you can’t experiment. Pick one thing to experiment with for 90 days. Maybe you are going to work on your Pinterest or Instagram or your SEO. Dabble in one thing at a time and know that that is okay. I think a lot of this is giving yourself permission to not drive yourself crazy. You don’t have to work 10 hours a day. You don’t have to work 8 or 6 hours a day. If you can be effective in less time, awesome. No one is clocking your hours. If you can get the job done in 4… cool you have the rets of the day. Take advantage of it. It is definitely a mindset shift to allow yourself to stop.

It is something I struggle with too because I like to just go go go, but knowing the difference between what you need to do because it is working and what you can let go of… is super refreshing.

Lauren: That is huge. Such a good piece of advice. Love it.

Want to know a secret? Sometimes I like to fall off the face of the earth for a while. Not in a literal sense of course, but definitely when it comes to social media.

Why do I do it? Well, easy. When you become so consumed in what is trending and what’s going on social media, sometimes you forget to jump back into reality. A couple of weeks ago, I found myself scrolling through Instagram instead of playing with my daughter. I was so consumed with what everyone else is doing in the photography business that I started feeling bad about my own.

The comparison game. It is 100% real and it 100% sucks. There, I said it. It sucks.

In this industry, we find ourselves hearing over and over again, “Don’t compare yourself to other people.” Yeah, OKAY. But how do we stop ourselves from doing it? Here is the answer…

1. Take a Break

Get off your damn phone or computer. Walk outside and get a breath of fresh air. Meditate. Play with your animals or kids (or both if you multitask.) Your life isn’t worth spending time on social media pondering the thought of who is and who isn’t better than you. When you take a break, you can actually start thinking of new and fresh ideas that you want to somehow incorporate in your business or personal life. After you have taken a break…

2. Find Inspiration

Have you heard of Pinterest? It’s pretty amazing if I do say so myself. But start pinning stuff that you want to do! Or even better, go somewhere where you can find inspiration. Maybe that is a greenhouse, or a humane society, or even your backyard. Wherever that may be, find inspiration in things that light you up. What is it in your life that sets your soul on fire? Whatever that may be, go do it! Last but not least, after you have found your inspiration…

3. Implement those Ideas!

DO IT! I dare you! Once you take the initiative to actually implement the ideas you were inspired by, do it. Not only will it make you feel better, but you will be able to share your inspiration with others! It’s a win, win.
